Im making this game and I've almost finished the engine. I just need some feedback so I know what to change, add, remove etc. Any comments good and bad are appriciated. Any great ideas for weapons/missions will get a mention in the credits. If your interested I'm going to keep updating the games progress in my newgrounds userpage.

If you could rate the following things out of 5 that would be a good help cheers.

lol GTA mothaF***er!
it looks fine, it plays nice, its GTA so not completely original but its a good idea, and the only problem i rly had was the controls, easy to remeber but they put to much strain on the wrist/forearm. id suggest space as shoot, W as sprint and E for weapons instead of S, D is fine, so are the movement controls =) good work!

Next time someone tells you to "Leave room for the holy spirit.." ask them if they are implying you have a threesome.

The gfx were way too basic and boring.
Gameplay was good, but not enough to really rate it properly yet.
The concept is cool but defiantly not original.
The controls were rather retarded, didn't like 'em at all.

Controls suggestion:
Up = Forward
Down = Backwards
Left = Left
Right = Right
Possibility for mouse control (turning).
SpaceBar = shoot
W = Sprint
A = Weapon -
D = Weapon +
P = Pause

Cheers for the comments guys, I think I'll make your control ideas default and make it so the user can change them to whatever they want.

Other things I'm adding to the game are cars possible even boats and helicopters, a much much bigger city (The engine is tile based so I'm not limited by size), 2 player street racing, 2 player deathmatch, more weapons, full story mode with missions and more...

Any more comments? Ideas would be great too. Also I forgot to mention before but I'm having a bit of trouble with the frame rate, if you could post your average frame rate on high and low quality.

26-29fps, but the quality doesn't really change it. Just wondering how you're gonna do helicopters, would be a bit hard to control the Y axis for it :\

I think there should be some innocent pedastrians. It seems like every single person in the game is trying to kill you. Also, when the "q" button is pressed the turbo meter goes down, even if you arent running. Great game.

He said he is almost done with the engine, not the game. That means the game is probably only 30% done.

For the helicopter I was just going to make it so there is no boundries but I think I might just stick to cars. About the frame rate theres not much I can do as I've optimized as much as possible, maybe AS3 is the only way.

About the innocent pedestrians, I am going to have some but not many due to frame rate issues and there isn't going to be random people that kill you, they are going to be the police that only appear when you commit a crime or it's part of a mission.

Any other ideas?

For helicopters, you could add a shadow underneath the chopper that gets farther away the "higher" you are (realistically).

I notice when u attack with your bat it does no damage, lol also i was dead for most of the time i played :P and is it just me i didnt see any cars in the engine or are u just gonna add them into the final product =)?

This is a really early demo (although it did take weeks to make). I have made cars but its a bit glitchy so I left it out the demo. And yeah the bat doesn't do any damage yet lol but I'll sort all that out soon. Also keep in mind that the game is only about 10% done, theres loads more I have planned...

Not the greatest graphics but the suffice more than enough.
Gameplay - 3 out of 5.
Good gameplay, familiar. Bat does not work. Should be able to pick up ammo.
Concept - 5 out of 5.
Not completely original. But I liek the idea of a miniaturized web game of GTA. So, I like.
Controls - 1-2 out of 5.
You put time into making the controls original, but they suck. The movement controls need to be seriously changed. Didn't mind the Weapon controls, took some getting used to but it was alright.

The people need to drop a random amount of cash (between 2 amounts), and some ammo for w/e gun they are carrying, or a bat, ect.

Your health drops way too quickly, and you also should add body armor. Change the blue sprint bar to yellow, and add in the blue body armor bar.

you should make that bullets can't go through houses/walls/other objects
i know it's hard to do , but it will add a lot

:I had roughly 26-29 fps with quality high/medium/low. Movement was very fluid and worked well.
it must be the script that is making it lag a tiny bit, which could be a problem when I add more code to it. I was thinking about converting to AS3 but theres so much code that it would take ages to change and there some stuff to learn.

:I cant add much that hasnt been said. Controls were funky shouldnt be a huge problem. Enemies :defiantly need to drop money/ammo.

Maybe an option for money in USD/Pound/Euros with automatic conversion. For the helicopter you :could try scaling the tiles down as the person flies higher so that it would give the illusion of moving :away from the ground. But I realize this can be rather challenging due to how tiles are placed ( at :least in the usual tile based engine).

I'll defiantly try it but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it working, I was also thinking about zooming out a bit when your in a car.

One other thing which I don't seem to see in the newer one is that your stars go past 5, but maybe someone said that already. I remember the first version of this in the beginning. Much better.

Overall: Fairly good game with cool graphics, and decent game-play. The people shot too much though, so it would have been impossible to beat them if I could die. The controls were good, but sprint should be shift or control (something easily accesible). Personally i would reccomend asd and shift for actions and stuff like that, and the arrows for movement.

Good luck finishing the game, It'll probably be pretty sweet when it's finised :p

I've implemented some of the suggestions and I'm currently working on the bullets hitTesting the building (It's not as easy as a simple hitTest because of the tile based method I'm using). So anymore thoughts?

I enjoyed it.
The 'wanted' level, although obviously from GTA, is a nice touch.

I'm not certain if you are doing this already, but to reduce lag, why not cache the background as a bitmap?
If the movieclip is already on the stage, it's rather easy to do.
And if it is dynamically loaded onto the stage...it's still rather easy to do.

I'm pretty sure that your side scrolling won't require the background MC to need redrawing.
