It's not about saving the galaxy.
You mean destroying HALO in order to stop a chain reaction that would wipe out all life ISN'T saving the galaxy?
And in no way is the story generic, it has a common theme, wow it takes place in the future and in space with aliens.
Generic super soldier wakes up to find his ship under attack. Gets off ship and saves his crew members whilst destroying entire armies of enemies almost entirely on his own.
At some point discovers a threat to the galaxy and goes off to destroy the threat.
That is the plot of Halo. Their may be more flourishes and stuff in it but that is essentially it and it is nothing new or original.
Thats the only thing that you could call un-original about it.
Or there's the fact that the idea of Halo is VERY similar to the concept of Ring World in the book by the same name written by Larry Niven.
Or Possibly drawing from ancient history to name thing s( SPARTANS). Whilst that isn't a bad thing, I do it all the time when I'm writing, it's hardly original.
