how do i save a file in .swf format and how do i get the preloader to work w/ my flash?(this is my first flash ever) thanks for your help

Save the file in fla format and then test movie, the swf will appear next to the fla in the folder you saved it in.

Right, so, after you've tested it, go into the folder that your fla is in, and you should also see your swf.

Publish the movie. File -> Publish
About the preloader, make sure the scripting and syntax is correct. If the movie just plays without the preloader doing what it supposed to then maybe check the script. There are plenty of preloader and scripting tutorials all over this internet.
