The ads that run before movies and games are manually placed in the .SWF file by the authors - so that's outside of our control. :)

Have to admit, I still prefer to use the 'Pop-up' link rather than click the main one. Nostalgia or whatever, call me a philistine if you wish. I don't watch anywhere near as many submissions these days anyway

Hahaha... Those are run-of-network ads via Adbrite, so we don't directly pick and choose what shows up there. We can manually approve advertisers who want to directly purchase ads in that space - but a lot of those are for porn sites and I've been rejecting them.

I just think It would be cool if you could upload your own flash background after your flash passes the 2-day limit, but either way it's a nice change in and of itself.

Yeah, that was a big discussion point when we were putting together the redesign. There's still potential for stuff like that... Although a lot of users wouldn't make it as pretty as Adam Phillips would. :)

Seriously; with the benefits being more sponsorship, contests & original series on NG it's a no brainer.

those backgrounds ar fine since they're ads. i think there should be a black outline at the sides of the move also, to completely sepparate it from the outside ad. and can they be there only the first time you watc hthe submission and then be gone or something? or maybe having them a couple of minutes there, then disappear. they're distracting, but if they only appear on front page flashes then its fine for me : )

Yeah, this is another big question that I grapple with regularly... If the goal of NG is to provide exposure and opportunity for artists, then we should be ready to take the step back when artists "outgrow" NG for better opportunities... But there's a difference between that opportunity being a full time job in the television industry, or that opportunity being for other websites that just want to take the place of Newgrounds. The ultimate goal of NG is still to be the biggest and best community of Flash artists, so we gotta stay competitive to do so.

they look pretty cool to me.. last night i was watching a movie and a rush hour 3 ad appeared around, i thought that was the movie and i was expecting a rush hour parody LOL... so i got distracted but only for a few seconds cause it was the first time... anyway, besides you can see some interesting information sometimes while your movie is loading... so is not a problem at all...

... and since the movie is still 800 x 600 and modern monitors are bigger than that, why not use the remaining widht space for ads blending them to the design?, i know theres some stains and part of the design....but is just an idea...

I couldn't see it, I checked both new submissions straight from the portal, and the front page ones, and both methods of viewing. I didn't see any advitisements except for the text link under the submission.

With the launch of the redesign, we created what we considered to be the "optimal Flash viewing experience" - where the screen goes dark and the Flash is the focus. This is why we intend for each submission to have a short-term period where the ads are run, so this experience will still be retained.

This may be just one downside, but I personally think it's a REALLY big downside.
I would hate to have a big bright green image surrounding my TV screen, or a theater screen. =\

Is it possible that if you decide to keep it, there could be an on/on skin option in every User Account, or something? ...

I see only positive things, you can probably be more picky overall with what ads are put if it is economically a good thing, and pin-pointed ads can even be fun. i mean, its all about finding somewhere to meet with the advertiser, site owner and the fans. this i think its a good idea indeed, and it keeps the site layout intact too.

Another idea...I still believe there should be some type of embed feature so users can put movies on blogs. The embedded video could just link right back to the original submissions page, also have a link to the artist's page and of course, a link right to newgrounds.
Also, its a great way to kill bandwidth.

That would be really cool. The problem is, when people upload Flash, the NG system can't make any changes to it. With Youtube, it's built so that the player links back because the player plays the video. So NG wouldn't really be able to ensure the Flash links back to Newgrounds.

Here's what they should have done, and I've been really upset since the redesign that they didn't: When you view Flash on Newgrounds, it should have it's own designated view page. That way, you would be able to link directly to the view page, making it MUCH cleaner to link to content on NG. I find the lightbox pretty annoying, and extremely ineffective when it comes to large movies/games because they go off the screen. Viewing content here is the most important aspect of Newgrounds, you think they would give it it's own page and not just a mediocre lightbox :\

This isn't a crazy idea at all actually, GameFAQs.com frequently modifies the frontpage of their website and some sections to have advertisements as such, the actual background image changes and it's very effective.

Yeah, I actually get really tempted to give it a go with in-page Flash... Where the Flash is under the navbar and all the information is underneath... If we ever did that, it would probably be a mess to try and offer lightbox and pop-up as alternatives... So it would be a single option. We would also still need to deal with under judgment submissions differently - such as a thumbnail that expands into the submission when you click it. We might dabble with all that eventually.

Thats fine, whatevers best for Newgrounds really. As long as the ads aren't flashing pink and green that will distract the user and give someone an epileptic fit.

When I shop at harvey nicks, everyone thinks i'm a star. Cause I wear wear my rented blazer and step out my rented car.

I find it distracting.
It would be hard concentrating on an animation thats alittle dark when you have kinda bright drawings in the background.
I think its too big.

I don't like it, sorry.

Also something i wanted to ask. Sorry double post...

Would the 'skins' show up no matter what the movie dimensions were? I mean what if my movie is a measily 300x300 would it be 'taken over' by a full screen ad regardless? Or could you have some sort of thresh hold to where the default 550x400 and above movie sizes are the ones that have the adserving on them?

I tend to agree with Lazymuffin if you have a small footprint movie and this gigantic skin eating it alive.
