Here's why:
He called you an ignorant faggot. This is a two part insult, the first part being 'Ignorant', and the second being 'Faggot'.
While Ignorant generally means 'Uneducated / Lacking knowledge' (As in, you don't really know what you're talking about), Faggot was just a simple substitute for a less offensive description of you.
He could have easily called you an Ignorant Person, but to be that little bit more insulting, he replaced Person with faggot.
You tried to nullify the insult by acting like the two parts of the insult were supposed to be related outside of the insult context, when they really weren't.
