Tom, you know I've been a fan for a long time. I love the site, I admire you guys, we ate $7 sandwiches. The design is awesome, I love the subtle color changes, the rounded edges. It makes the site a little softer on the eyes without taking away the "hardcore" image. Pico popping out behind the "NG Features" draws you there so you don't miss it.

However, the code is crappy. I can't even tell what version of HTML it is. There's no DOCTYPE or meta data. There's too many nested tables. There's invalid HTML code (like FONT and EMBED tags). Linking to an external style sheet and cutting down on some of the code can save download time for users.

To sum it up? Look = good. Code = bad.

I don't know that much about html but meta data only matters for search engines getting information from the site, right? And EMBED tags are the OBJECT tags of Netscape, i know that for a fact, so they are quite necessary for us Netscape users. As for style sheets and the rest of that stuff, i'm lost. All i know is that the look is good and the code, well, that's for Tom and Co. to deal with.

Umm, i don't think that i like it very much. plus, if it's not like every other page on the site it just doesnt flow very well from that page to all the others.
you should have asked us, your newgrounders, if we wanted a new lay out. the reason why i dont like it? Not only does it look like the outwar layout, its not black. And i think that newgrounds is best known for its dark humor, and the black is the best color for it.

This layout ROCKS! I think it should be a little darker though... When I think of newgrounds, darkness is brought to mind... Mostly because of all the bloody cartoons and games. No matter what you decide to do with it, I'm sure it'll turn out great! Good job! It looks sweet

I like the new look. Makes the site look more modern. The last one just looked bad, and like it was made in the 90s (for all I know, it may have been). But the looks nice.

Response to New Site Layout 2003-07-02 23:40:23

wow, i love the layout... and I guess I love this thread because it attracted over 200 users to respond to the layout!!!

Response to New Site Layout 2003-07-02 23:41:41

my thoughts exactly! actually, wut u just said sums up whut i just said.

You don't need to use EMBED tags... here is the code I use for the fan-net .swf on my site, and it works in Netscape.

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="images/fan_box.swf?id=49175" width="65" height="60">
<
param name="movie" value="images/fan_box.swf?id=49175" />
<
a href="http://www.newgrounds.com?id=49175">Newgrounds.com</a>
<
/object>

Meta data can also help identify the site if someone view's the source code, because you can add authors, designers, contact email, keywords, descriptions, etc. You don't need them to run the site, it just helps searched and viewers.

The DOCTYPE and the encoding are needed though. The page won't validate as HTML until they're there.

The style sheets being used now only control the colors of the page, and the sizes of certain pieces of text, and the scrollbar (in Internet Explorer). But CSS can also position layout, add borders, and do other nifty things that keep the code clean and the site faster-loading.

sweet layout

Response to New Site Layout 2003-07-02 23:50:44

Yea I noticed that also, my http watcher gave me a crap load of errors, there is incomplete tags, mainly i think they are complete tage but they are overlyed by the includes so they become invalid... ie
you have two <span> tags toghter and that just wont work right :-P but other than that its awsome, now you gotta worry abotu image bandwidth :-P

Looks good stamper, nice choice tom, way to go liljim on working it out.

Looks great. But about the all the pop-ups, especially the new ezine support: Do you really want your website to be affiliated with such outrageous smut? In addition, is it worth supporting Newgrounds for free when the ezine distributes your address and you get megabytes of porn spam?

Its cool man, but still with Broadband it loaded a lil slow. Maybe its the server and all the ppl on here takin up the bandwidth, but yeah. It looks nice.Props.

I see that, well, the book i bought for Flash says that <Embed> tags are necessary for Netscape to display non-broswer native media. Maybe that was just for older versions. But i noticed that on NG when i watch a movie and look and the media on the page info, my browser used the embed tags over the object tags and vice versa with IE. But on your site it juse uses the Object tags....that's wierd....now you've got me wondering.

nice layout!

Response to New Site Layout 2003-07-03 00:11:13

When the background image showed up, I thought I clicked the wrong link on my browser. But no, it's NG!!!!! Looks really nice because it has a video game menu feel to it. Also, it seems more organized now - i.e. easier to see the various sections.

One thing: the white font over the green background of the howering textbox at the SIGN IN/JOIN buttons is not very visible in my opinion. Using a darker background color (e.g. the darker brown of the NG logo) would be better.

Overall, great job Stamper!!!

I agree. It does look good.
But I'm with Freak on this. It's jumbled and messy to the extreme on the underside. Why not use CSS? Seriously... HTML has its limits, and CSS is the way of the future.

Why not have the problems of tomorrow, today?

It's not something to be ashamed of, the messy code... I once used <blink>...OMG... did I just say that?!!

Oh.. and Starcleaver... and all Netscape users...
DROP IT! NETSCAPE SUCKS!!! And has for a while. It's sad that there are not many alternatives... but Netscape is the mother of all internet ugliness. Literally.

God I can't stand it, its so slick, so corporate, everthing that NG isn't, or wasn't. I feel like I'm being sold something.

Badass as hell. I would have no doubts about a product of Stamper, his site is awesome too. Those screenshots of Keeblur 2 look real promising. I love the new layout, its real sharp and different looking.

It looks amazing! I was so surprised to see it changed. I like how when you have over the different rectangles, they flash a little. Also, the search options are better.

i have noticed the new site layout and i think it is really cool. The only problem is it seems to be laggin up a lot of slower computers, because my friends who have slow ass computers lol all of the ones who have been to the site experienced a longer loading time. Although i still think this site layout is awesome and should be kept
