Here are some entry-level sequencers (that is, compared to others out there) that are relatively affordable (at academic price). Both work on opposite operating systems, with no compatibility with the other.

Apple's Logic Express 7

and the NG favorite,

FL Studio 7 (Producer Edition).

I'm kind of sick of Windows so I'm wondering if the next comp I get (in a couple years) should be a Mac or Windows, but that decision really lies in this one: which is the better sequencer/editor?

Also take into account the actual computers in question... there will be no hardware problems with the Macs, as Logic Express is specifically designed for these computers, but extra hardware will most likely need to be purchased for PCs as FL Studio 7 is non-affiliated with Microsoft, or any other PC hardware company such as the Audio Hardware developer Creative.

I prefer fl studio. It's a lot easier to use.

I don't think anyone here owns both

I've tried both though, and I really like Logic better. But it's really about your own opinion, try both for yourself (You can try logic in most apple stores- And I'm sure you have a pc in your house, so try the demo if you haven't already

One thing to keep in mind is what you are planning on doing with the software. I'm not particularly impressed with the way FL handles audio files, so if audio is going to be a significant part of your productions, I'd look elsewhere.

I'd personally recommend Logic Express, since it's based off of Logic, which is a tried-and-true industry standard. Besides, all Logic Express files can be opened in Logic Pro, so if you do plan on upgrading you wont have to rewrite or reformat any of your files. Yes, the learning curve is steeper, but Logic will ultimately open up more options for you.

That's all sound advice. I do agree with the fact that it's a step up in the learning curve, but that its audio editing capabilities can't possibly be worse than FL Studio 7's.

I'm assuming it has more (and better quality) effects?

I'm not sure what is included in Logic Express, but I do know that Logic Pro comes with a pretty extensive plug-in library (70 is the current count last time I checked), and peoeple seem to be very happy with the included software instruments.

Obviously some things will be take out in Express, but I'm guessing it's still a step up from FL Studio. My advice would be go do a search on google for something like "Logic Express vs FL Studio", and see what comes up. Since many of the artists here use FL exclusively, you're going to get a biased opinion, especially considering many of these artists may not have even touched Logic.

There is no argument, however, that Logic's audio production features far surpass FL's. Logic is meant as an all-around music production kit much like Cubase and Sonar, so if you're going to be using both audio and midi on a regular basis, go with Logic.

Alright, it's settled, I think... Logic Express 7. I'll wait for Leopard and 8 to come out.

I've used Logic only in pro recording sessions, and I can tell you that it works very well in that regard. I have no clue about its sequencing capabilities....I use FL for that.

So yeah, if you're gonna do recording. get Logic.

Hmm... I'm also wondering about the stability of Logic, despite preconceptions of Mac stability. FL Studio 7 has been pretty stable when I've used it, and I'm hoping Logic will give me the same performance.

Also, scroll all the way to the bottom of this page. It says something about "External Instruments"... are these extra instruments you buy that are not included with Logic, or is this a name of an instrument included? If Logic Express can't take the instruments I've purchased (all are compatible with Macs as AU's) I don't think this would be a right purchase.

Read my post above about stability issues as well.

g9, mate, seriously, even if it is only logic express go with logic. it owns logic in every way shape and form, to me it really is a no brainer, if you have the money and the motivation, skip express and just get the full logic programme. you're talking an industry standard on a par with cubase. i haven't used logic since it was on the pc tho, but i really liked it back then, it can only have gotten better since.

$150 to $500 is quite a big jump, though. But they really are the same program, aren't they? Same learning curve, 'cept Pro has more features to work with. Good plan overall, but $350 might be a little out of the way. Though I will probably end up upgrading later on...
