Got the flash trial today and was so excited to make my circles fight my triangles and have all my other dreams come true, but I have hit quite a snag.
I can never get the AS to work!
I've been using the Flash Tut Collab 06' mostly, and I can't get any of those codes to work.
I right click my symbol, convert it to a button, movieclip etc., go to the actions menu, and it says "Current selection can not have actions applied to it." So what I have been trying is clicking on the "Scene 1" button to the left, and that lets me apply code. I think though that the code is going to the wrong place or something.
I have no clue.
I'm using the free trial at Adobe, so it ActionScript 3.0
Thanks for whatever help you can give.
The Tutorial Collab '06 is AS 2. AS 3 is different. Try looking on google for AS 3 tutorials.

I'd suggest that you start a new fla and choose 'Actionscript 2.0' from the options. AS3 doesn't allow you to put actions on MCs or buttons (fucking stupid, IMO), so everything has to be coded on the timeline or in classes.
AS3 was not designed for beginner coders, unfortunately, and that is one of its biggest flaws

Nice to see you back to posting regularily Denvish. Hope we manage to find you a nice quiet bar to crash in for the UK Meet. Have you got any recommendations on books or sites to begin learning AS3? And I mean from the ground up - I want to make sure I miss nothing.

I haven't really attempted it myself yet, the stuff I'm currently working on doesn't require any higher than FP8, so I'm happy (in terms of work, anyway) to stick with what I know, ie AS2. That's not to say that I don't wish to explore computeSpectrum and the 3D potential of AS3, I just don't have the time or need for it right now. Also, I generally refer to the internet, rather than books, for coding info.
BTW, saw your reply in http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/7578 01 - someone showed me that a Starwing thing a while back, and it blew me away - I've played with 3D engines in AS2, and am aware how cpu-intensive they are, but it looks like AS3 takes it to a whole new level

Its developed in Papervision. Which looks like a new interesting API to work in with the AS3.0 language. Lord knows how I'm going to keep up either - work only needs me to work in eight, if that at all, for the stuff they need me to do.
Still. Let me know if you find something comprehensive
