If you knew your child was going to have a severe genetic defect, for example Down's Syndrome would you consider aborting it? (amniocentes can determine this before they become fully formed).

Our doctor asked us the very same question.
We said no. But that was answered in ignorance. Our decision may have changed if we had gotten the test and found out that our baby did have down syndrome (or other disease).

I'm going to have to say no...
If you're aborting them because you don't think you can handle it, that's just plain selfish.
if you're aborting it because you think the child will lead a misurable life; i can't disagree with you, only tell you that you're making a rather dangerous asumption. I personally would be obligated to let the child live; there have been times in my life i was misurable and i wanted to commit suicide [Sadly, plenty of people also experience this at one point or another in they're lives]
The system was designed so that i as a person was legally un-allowed to take my own life; Im fine now.

In Canada, it is legally against the law to attempt suicide; commiting suicide is not illegal.

I would have to disagree with you there. Have you actually met a retarded perosn in your life? The retards at my school are probably the happiest people I know. Just because they live differently than you and their brains are different from most other peoples' does NOT mean that they can never be happy. For the OP, definitely not.

It depends on my ability to cope. If I am unable to give the child the special treatment, attention or whatever etc that it needs, then I would seriously consider it, but I wouldn't walk into it lightly as in general I disagree with abortion.

I'm going to be honest here for a change and say I'd give the possibility some serious consideration. Everyone's always saying how people with mental retardation are human beings too and they shouldn't be discriminated against, but I don't think anybody here would put up a big happy smile if the doctor said to them that they were going to be the parents of a retarded baby. That being said, I'd probably not have the balls and decide to have the baby anyway, but it'd take me some serious time to get accustomed to it.
Also, I believe that it would only happen if they were mentally retarded. If they, like, were missing a limb or were blind or something that would be totally bitchin', since they could get, like, robot prosthetics and shit.

Nah, I don't believe in abortion. But of course, I wouldn't be too happy with that.

Would you abort the child?, as for me. No I would not abort the child because of defects.
As much as you feel it's humanitarian, I feel its immoral.

I honestly don't know. Would depend on what kind of defect we are talking about. If it is mild retardation, then no, but if it was heavier shit, that could kill the baby later in life, I'd think more about it.

Nyhahaha, I escape your sweep. There are lots of mentally handicapped students at the school I work at (I'm serious, they are mentally handicapped, it is not just me not liking the students).

Wrong,
Ever heard the old saying "The Dumb die happy?"
Simply why:
They will most likely never in their life understand terrorism, nuclear threats and weapons of mass destruction. Chemical Warfare. Anthrax. Radiation from nukes. Asteroids pounding the earth. Black Holes swallowing us. and many more situations that plague us daily. The happiest people on Earth are more than likely the ones who don't know anything outside of their own little world in their heads.

That is because we carry them on our shoulders. The "dumb" cannot make it on their own, so we have to work for them, since they cannot. It is hard not to live a good life when other people take all the burdens for you.

I remember watching the news a few years ago, it was about a handicapped woman wanting her husband to help her comit suicide because she couldn't herself. A large amount of handicapped people feel that they aren't normal which sends them into depression.
How glad would you feel?

we said MENTALLY handicapped dumbass, not physical handicapped, way different subject phyiscal handicap is.
but for the question, i would really have to think about and how serious the retardation is.
:and i have yet to see a mentally handicapped person, so my stance: Nothing

And I can GUARANTEE that there's a whole hallway dedicated to special education at the school I just got out of, and some of those people are seriously mentally handicapped. And then there was that one crazy guy who was homicidal...that dude was nuts.
Anyways, it'd really depend on the birth defect, if it was a mental handicap I probably wouldn't, if it was going to be like a major physical disability like...I can't think of anything, but it would have to be really really bad for me to consider it. Meh, besides that the final decision would be up too whoever I got pregnant, they're the one carrying the thing around after all.

Do you know what that sounds like to me:
"If they're going to die they better do it! and decrease the surplus population"
And judging by your stance on certain, economic issues, what bothers you so much about those who can support themselfs supporting those [Through *Cough* Taxes *Cough*] who cannot. Welfare is a burden on those who can pay high taxes and still live a moderate to low moderate life style, but very few of these individuals advocate for the Abortion of the poor.

I think I'd rather just not know whether or not my child was going to come out abnormally, so that way I wouldn't feel pressured to do anything like that. And anyway, what is said above is true, that the dumb are happier. I'd really love to have a smart child, though, despite the fact that intelligence can often be more of a curse than a virtue.

How many of you actualy have children? I have 2 little boys (4 and 2), although evil at times, i couldnt imagine my life without them. If you do have children, and say you would abort, i would think you have a mental problem, children are life changing and rewarding. Just because your life may become harder or inconvienced, you would opt to abort seems insanely selfish, remember, it wasnt the babies choice to be made, it was yours, take responcibility for your actions. I dont agree with abortion, however i also dont think its my job to tell other people what to do with their bodies.
AND THIS....................IS MY LAB!!!!
