They can't shut down kazaa because it works outside of the US. Plus, if they were to start targeting users, it wouldn't prove a thing. They'd have to sue FTP users, IRC users, AIM users. It's basically fascist mafia tactics being used by the RIAA. Just boycott their records. I mean, statistics have proven that their sales have gone up since people found out about more improved p2p programs.

basically, they would have to create a massive virus that is attached with mp3's, than the only way to fix it is to delete the mp3s. thats my conclusion of it

They also like to do nasty stuff like putting virus's in pictures and a lot of hacking groups from Asia put spread viruses by putting them into newly released games

does this mean the RIAA won't sue people outside the us

that would just be illegal tho, cause not all mp3's downloaded are illegal

It's perfectly legal to freely distribute music- so long as you aren't paid for it. That was the main idea of the pertainant law that came out once tape recording was invented.
Now that more people are doing it, they want to change the law, (people are still doing it, albeit using a different medium) because it doesn't suit their best interests.
They're basically trying, (sucessfully) to always have US laws wrapped around what they want. It's terrible.

That reminds me of the front page post Tom made awhile ago about the sugar lobby. It's seriously fucked-up how big business acts in this country.

kazaa isn't a place, it doesn't have a server, it's all p2p. Content is entirely random.
And anyway, stop searching for porn.

Yeah, not all mp3's are illegal.
And theres only a TINY section of techno at the music store, so the only place I can get good techno from is from KaZaA, also I bought a new fatboy slim cd, if it wasn't for the p2p I would have never known who fatboy slim was,and I would have never gotten into techno. So I think p2p works, if you like the song, you should go out and buy the CD, the more sales they get, the more music they'll make. And if you've never bought a cd and is always downloading mp3s, you should be ashamed of yourself, you're the one that's making everyone pissed.

Actually, Kazaa was sued and the US government did say the record companies could press charges even though the main servers sat in Austrailia (I believe) because over 4 million American citizens use it, thus makeing it an American business held to American laws.
What the record companies want to do is track down the users that have a substancial amount of songs up for DL and press charges against them in hopes to scare off other file shares. Or, you could be like the guy in Ohio I believe, who wants to destroy the hard drives of those who DL music. But that's guy is just a fucking dick and knows nothing about computers, the internet, kazaa, file shareing or anything that doesn't involve fucking your sister. I pray at night that that guy chokes to death. Maybe if we all clap our hands and truley believe...
Personally I don't think anything can stop this File Shareing. CDs are way to expensive and the conveince of not leaving your home to get what you want is all too rewarding. The only way the music industry will win this, is if they join up with Kazaa or somebody and make a cheap affordable file sharing server that we can all agree on. Then in 2 years they can jack up the price and rape us analy once more.
Peace

Stupid record companies. It doesn't matter how fast they go. Kazaa still has well over a billion users. They can't sue everyone, especially if there's a possibility they can lose. Hell, a lot of projects in school these days require the use of kazaa and they tell you that you can get stuff via kazaa, morpheus, etc. As long as we continue using it, they'll realize they can't win and give up.

for every new law that is made (or made tougher) there is a new way to get around that same law.

The RIAA is targeting individual users because they can't really target kazaa itself. I know it's such a travesty because you accually have to pay for your entertainment now, but that's life.
And I mean the RIAA IS targeting individual users. They are having lawsuits writen up prolly as we type this.
You guys should look up slashdot.org more often.

Acually, you are wrong. They are viewing it as more of a library of MP3s. That means you can LEND them to people, but you can't COPY them. So, if I wanted to give you an MP3, I could let you download it and delete my copy. Then it would be legal. Again, I'm getting my information from the source from an interview with a guy from the RIAA. Look it up on slashdot.org to find the accual article.
