Given that internet viruses are common-place and there are a bunch of conniving degenerate hacks with no purpose in life other then to exploit windows flaws should the govt. impose stricter laws on internet viral activity?
i.e sentence people who make viruses to jail where they can get their scrawny worthless albino asses gang raped by hardened criminals for several years..?

I thought people who made viruses already DO go to jail.

The biggest issue is tracking down WHO is doing it, so that we can arrest them, not the strictness of the laws.

Which is pretty damn hard to do.

The real problem is that most of the "real" hackers i.e Kevin Mitnick don't tend to write malicious viri and as a result it is made by either idiots who know some C, C+, or C++. Or they are written by bored teenagers as a prank. Either way people will do stupid things even if you try and stop them, all we can do is to try and catch the ones we can. As for the rest.....well maybe that'll take some time.

I think that the penalty for making a virus should be one count of vandalism for each computer affected.

Tracking down people who make viruses would require softwere which would probably invade the privacy of somone's computer.
Also note that there is a difference between virus and spam. Spam usually does end up slowing your computer, but it's purpose is not to do that, spam is created to blast your computer with ads to get you to buy the stuff that companies are selling. Viruses are malicious software with every intent of eating away your memory and eventually simply killing your computer.
Tony did you get you're computer infected or something because i'm surprised at why you... of all people would be in favor of police action against annoying bastards.

Well it's better to send them to jail than to put someone in jail for getting caught for possession of drugs. But, they are a bit of a pain to track down, and yeah it probably would require software that might have to invade the privacy of someone's computer, but I think there would be something like they have to be suspected for it.

think outside of the box. Problem is, everything criminal revolves around the clink. you steal a car, its the clink for you. you knock someone out in a bar, its the clink for you. if you get caught drinking and driving, yep, the clink. its pretty uncreative. We need creative judges who will allow and even make use of some of the justice tools of old, such as public humiliation, corporal punishment, and executions.
some fool creates a virus and spreads it? make him replace every computer ruined by it.
some fool beats another fool not in self defense? well, the punishment needs to fit the crime, beat em.
some fool commits rape? I reckon we can figure out some form of... suitable punishment.
some fool steals from some other fool? make him repay the fool double the amount for the stolen goods, half for the goods, and half to show him what its like to be robbed.
some fool does something minor? public humiliation.
the jails are overcrowded because they're used for all punishments, not all crimes deserve the same punishment.
I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

I take it I'm not the only one who doesn't like hackers.
