Court upholds affirmative action 2003-06-23 19:14:59 Reply

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that colleges can favor black, Hispanic and other minority students in admissions, but said that schools cannot blindly give extra points to minority candidates and must assess each applicant's background.

In dramatic announcements that were the court's first statements on racial preferences in education in a quarter-century, the justices upheld the University of Michigan's affirmative action policy that favors minorities who apply to its law school, but struck down a point system used by Michigan's undergraduate program, saying it went too far in giving a boost to minorities.

The 5-4 decision in the law school case is key because it sets in stone a much-debated principle that was first articulated by the court in a 1978 ruling: that a university's "compelling" interest in a diverse student body justifies the consideration of race in admissions.

I dont see anything more of a sticky-wicket than affirmative action, if it didnt exist, many people wouldn't get the chance that everyone should get. However as with Michigan, some of those who earn the chance may not be able to get it.

As an African American male, I feel like I have no choice but to support affirmative action because with out it I'd be out of my $250,000 paying job. However, I don't like the fact that some caucasian people are being cheated as well because of affirmative action.

Can colleges favour White students for no reason at all?

Certainly not. If they did that it would be "racism".

See the double standard?

Since Im not going to school for Law I may be wrong by saying this, but this might in fact be interpreted this way. It basicly said that Race can be a quality that can be used in determining a decision; it cannot be THE determinant though. If so, I can hire a white guy that has the same qualifications as the black guy and openly admit that I did so because I wanted a white guy. Define minority; that may be a loophole. My spelling is off, and like I said, Im not going to school for Law, but it seems that this point could be argued.

Yeah, this BS is just going to do wonders for us, hard working, white Americans, who deserve what's ours. But instead it's gonna go to some minority, damnit.
