They were advanced for native americans, Europeans and the chinese lived in aareas where they could communicate ideas and technologies, a huge advantage.

While I agree that there's hardly anything worse than angsty pagan assholes with their Hot Topic-bought rituals and religions, let's not mix up Mayans and Aztecs. Cortés set foot in the Aztec Empire when the Aztecs were at their peak, and still they weren't THAT incredibly amazing in comparison to Europe, except perhaps in some aspects of astrology and architecture. Destroying the Aztec Empire was almost a complete piece of cake for Cortés considering the ridiculously small amount of manpower he used, even though people seem to forget that nearly all of the fighting was done by tribes that allied with the Spaniards.
The Mayans, however, are a different story entirely. They reached their peak several centuries before the Spanish arrived (between 250 AD and 900 Ad) and during that time they were far above the Europeans in terms of scientific development and all that crap. When the Spaniards arrived they found an extremely deteriorated civilization, and STILL it took them nearly 200 years to finally be able to claim that they had "conquered" them, and even after that happened they would have to keep enduring Mayan revolts nearly every decade. In comparison: It took them less than 10 years to completely subjugate the Aztecs, and around 200 to put the Mayans under control.

The Mayans didn't suck that much. The whole end-of-the-world thing, however, is total New Age hippie bullshit. 2012 is supposed to be the end of a cycle, just like the Chinese calendar marks the end of the year of the Hedgehog and the start of the year of the Aardvark or some shit like that.

The only catholics that I know... just enjoy their alcohols lol. There are churches around me that have really strict codes and have certain abilities that can cause you problems. There are the CoC's, RofL's, and a few others that have "places of worship" located is key areas of towns so they can control what enters and what goes. My county is dry (no alcohol for those not used to that), becuase a College controls the town... a frigging college! They wouldn't let a Chili's be put in the city limits becuase they serve alchohol. Now they are out of the city limits and no drinks still. Don't get me wrong, I don't drink but I also don't have anything against it other than in excess. Churches and places like them have been used as a place to express ideas (good or bad) and serve as a meeting house to bring people together. No one can really say rather there is a god or not (but you have the right to believe what you want).. but people will use that in politics and every where else. Sorry if I drifted off some on this lol.

And that because why? Today and the 1500's are different things. There are 500 years between, half a millenium. The Aztec technology was great for Native Americans at the time, they compromised lack of weapons with advancements in, for an example, astrology. They also controled large amounts of gold, which is mostly why the Spaniards took over there. The Spanish economy crumbled some hundred years later, due to the fact that the American gold wasn't enough to substain it (and some really bad mismanagement by the Royal House).
