the other 2 main groups are eastern orthodox, and protestants.

There are also illegal christians such as Gnostics, and then general spiritualists who [Some of which are christian] embrace various religons all at once. [It's not really christianity at that point though, it's generally a doctrine of peace and open mindedness that doesn't involve atheism. ]

Catholics and protestants have different doctrinal beleifs but in terms of political thinking, a devout catholic and a protestant should be able to find some common ground, if not, a lot of it.

That part actually does make a bit of sense taken as a metaphor. The Aztecs sacrificed humans in order to gain a more prosperous society by appeasing the gods. Abortion is done for a variety of reasons, but the most liberal proponents say it helps society prosper by controlling population and poverty.

A similar metaphor is used in Metropolis, where the machine transforms into Moloch (if you haven't seen this film, this clip is on youtube). Here the idea is that the working class is sacrificed to the machines so that the city may continue to function.

I haven't seen this particular episode, but I highly doubt they could get that point across effectively and probably made it sound like the abortions were being offered to pagan gods or something.
