I've noticed we can now upload a 'personal icon'. When I've done this, where will that icon appear? It doesn't seem to be next to my posts or anything.....

It'll appear next to your news posts, if you ever make them... and possibly elsewhere in the future.

It's going to appear next to your news post (or blog if you will). In your profile. It'll also appear on the front page next to the headline pf your news post (left side on the screen), If you choose fo it to be on the front page.
