You don't have to join the army to run away.

A friend of mine is joining the army in a few months. From the sounds of it, it's a pretty sweet deal. I'd totally do it if I didn't have a problem with taking orders.

Canada will have to actually do something with thier army.

I love how you make it sound so serious, like this is to be your "coming of age" and then you say that you're in Canada. HAHAHAHA. What the hell are you going to do in the Canadian army? Are you off to fight Switzerland? I bet they'd be good competition.
Normally I'd just criticize you for so callously putting your life on the line for a piece of land and the aristocratic society running it. However, since this is CANADA we're talking about, I'm going to laugh at your attempt to run away from your parents and hope you at least get some free beer in the army.
Pfft, Canda. Honestly now...
Someone once asked me why I call myself Unimportant. Simple, I said. As a nihilist, that's what I see everyone and everything as. In the end, we are all Unimportant.

There's more meaningful things to do with your life than joining the army. Put your motivation to good use and think of something.

If that's what you want to think to help you sleep at night, good luck with that. We are simply tools of a government policy and nothing more. I'm only in it for electrical engineering training, regardless of if it means willingly throwing away my own free will. It only beats college in that I don't have to pay for it and a job outside of the Navy would see me as "trainable" and willing to work/take orders. However, I'd be on summer vacation with my family if I were in college right about now. There's very little money/self-respect/hard work involved in joining the military.
i at least got the balls to go do something like this
That means nothing at all. There is no toughness in any branch. You can have all the balls you want, yet you mean nothing to the 30-year general/captain or the crazed lunatic with a gun in front of you.
im pretty sure if u had the chance, u might even do something like this
You have 5 years to see where life takes you. I have 5 years to wait and start off fresh. You tell me who has the better plan?

Here's $37,000 for college.
Oh sorry; you have to chip in $100/month out of your own paycheck for a year in order to get that. And it's only good for 10 years (but you have a 6 year enlistment term and $37,000 won't last you through 4 years of college anyway). Your only hope is to re-enlist since everyone else is going 6 years and out. Here; we'll give you $10000 on the spot if you do so.
Free medical care
Because when you get shot, we need your ass healed and back on the front line. BTW; our medical staff is trained in just 6 months rather than your typical 7+ year doctors, and the most you'll get is first aid until we can send you to a real hospital.
Free room and board
http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/7706/
pictureat4.jpg
.....Hoo-ya free room and board.
Worst part is that we have the most money invested in our training as enlisted trainees than anyone else in the Navy and yet I live in a fucking motel room basically. Although it could be a tent in some sand-pit.
That whole "good deal" line is BS unless you're in past about 10 years; then it's "somewhat good." Hell; I only make $500 every 2 weeks. Beats my last job where I made only $300 every 2 weeks, but then again I only averaged about 20 hours/week there compared to about 20 hours/day here.
But if you want to go; go right ahead. There's not a gun to your head yet telling you to do so.
...yet

well have fun because there most likely won't be a war in those 5 and a half years later. If all you want is to fight then I thought you should know this.

Cool, what's the point of having all these wars if we can't use them to get rid of a few idiots?
Enjoy being blown up.

Ok, as an E-1, you make how much?
Better off going to college and joining as an officer if you want to join up.

Good thing you're enlisting, because I can tell by your typing that you're not going do well enough in school to get a real job.

$1203.90/month (gross) your first 4 months (2 months of bootcamp + first 2 months @ first command).
$1301.40/month afterwards until you make E-2 (given to you after 6 months I believe).
I started at (and currently I am still at) E-3 and make $1534.20/month. In 3 months, I'll be E-4, and earn $1699.50/month
Better off going to college and joining as an officer if you want to join up.
If you have a college degree already, then get a job somewhere out in the real world. Officer training consists of a 4 year "school" (it's really just a bootcamp that gives you a degree afterwards), followed by a forced 5-10 year contract. You also don't earn rank by doing through job performance, but rather if you're seriously liked enough. In the end; it doesn't make too much sense to take a degree into the military.
