Savewhores all. You'll find no users who know how to use their entire voting panel on the blacklist.

Random idea, but I had been thinking about making blacklisted status change on a monthly basis. As in users will need to meet a specific blam/save ratio each month or be blacklisted for that month, instead of it being based off their blam/save totals. That might be a little more fair to users who have a savewhore past, yet are trying to vote more fairly now. (Don't know how many fit that description, though...) I CAN however think of a few users high up on the list who would have been blacklisted for the past several updates. Any input from the users on this list would be welcome, of course.

Meh. It will take a while to get back into the Top 50. Hopefully Clock Day (it IS clock day, right? I mean, there are no banners and stuff) can help me a bit...

That seems reasonable to me, otherwise there is no incentive for a blacklisted user to improve. If they care about this list, and know that voting correctly can get them reinstated, then that should be an extra motivation. It is then simply a case of setting a reasonable threshold that absolutely shows a user who is abusing the system, and doesn't penalise those who are voting 0 but not getting the blams that they deserve. It also needs to take into account total points for the month.

Say a 50:1 ratio (a very generous ration admittedly, that really ought to be brought down eventually to 10:1), with a minimum of 50 points for the month (otherwise a user who only votes on 1 submission can be unblacklisted). Users who don't cast 50 votes can't be blacklisted (as it is easy to miss all potential blams if you only vote on 5 submissions a day from the bottom of the list every day, which I do sometimes).

That was my reasoning behind it. Also, there are some users who accumulated large amounts of blams back in the day, but have since turned to savewhoring. (These users are easy to see on the spreadsheet.) These guys are basically getting a free pass with the current method of blacklisting, which isn't fair.

Say a 50:1 ratio (a very generous ration admittedly, that really ought to be brought down eventually to 10:1),

50:1 sounds fair, that would be 20 blams for every 1000 saves -more than manageable, even by today's standards.

with a minimum of 50 points for the month (otherwise a user who only votes on 1 submission can be unblacklisted).

That's a good point; users who earn below a certain amount should be exempt. 50 B/P or less per month sounds good, too. Also, users who are inactive (0 B/P per month) with a save/blam ratio below 50:1 will remain blacklisted.

Thanks for the input/ideas.

Ok, after looking at the spreadsheet and being mortified by the results, I've decided to go with the following setup:

.Users who earn more than 100 B/P will be judged by their save/blam ratio from the previous month. save/blam ratios that fall below 100:1 will be blacklisted for that update. Seriously guys, that should be a cakewalk to manage.

.Users who have earned less than 100 B/P for the current update will be judged by their save/blam totals. The same ratio of 100:1 applies here as well.

After taking a look at the update I posted yesterday, there would be 20 blacklisted users for that given update. (I have exempted Toocool100, who has been strictly collecting saves since before it was cool.)

Sounds reasonable. And I doubt I will ever get in trouble with that ratio. Right now, I almost have a 2:1 saves:blams-ratio... (more like 2.3:1)

Based on my daily snapshots, I averaged about 2 blams a day. From 7/15 thru 8/15 my overall ratio was about 13:1 - certainly well within your range, but I think I can do better. However, my work IRL has been keeping me busy, and although I am on every day, I'm not on as long as I used to be. No worries - I'm not going anywhere soon - just balancing work and here.

Overall, I think you could drop your minimal ratios to 50:1, but use the cutoff at 150 BP (5 per day, each day of the month) - anyone with 150 or more is interested in collecting daily experience and stats. Below that, they are casual users who really don't help or hurt the cause. However, you may consider this: if a user had less than 150 bp total per month for each of the previous 3 months, and had NO blams - then blacklist them, as they cumulatively aren't helping us here. (no blams in 3 months? I don't think so)

Anyway, thank you again for the monthly update - your work and dedication is very much appreciated!

See you at the front lines...

*Salutes*

That is so depressing. I really thought 50:1 was a very generous level to be blacklisting at- I certainly didn't expect to see it drop to 100:1! It would be great if you kept tabs on the situation though, and started to alter that threshold as time passes. Use it as a constant motivator to keep improving that blam rate, as even though a lot of us are nowhere close to a terrible ratio like 100:1, I'm sure some would start to get twitchy at 25:1 or 15:1 (myself included), which is still achievable with the portal as it is.

Given that the rate of submissions is so much lower than it was 5ish years ago, I'd have to imagine there aren't going to me may newcomers to the list from here on out. Heck I'd just be happy cracking the top 1,000 again.

Seeing how you're not saving at the moment and your good voting habits, I'd say you'll be fine. You might want to start saving a bit again, though, if you ever want to get back to the top 50. ( Just a heads up -you've got a couple more users looking to pass you in the near future...) ;)

You're welcome, and hopefully there are many more reasons than just this list. ;)

Sadly, this will be my last update of ass kicking for me, with my (possible) retirement number of 50,000 less than 1,000 points away now. I don't like to say I'm done for good, but I do plan on savoring 50K (12k blams/38k saves) for quite some time at the least. With 100 blams still to go, I'll have to pull a Gagsy and just blam for a while, so I wont be totally dead for a little while longer...

Really? He got 1337 BP? Perfect for his name, right?

He got 1337 saves. He is the leet saver after all, so it is fitting. :P

Raising the threshold to 150 would be fine, but keeping track over the course of months may be difficult. (I'm doing this by eye, with help from the spreadsheet of course.) I'm currently trying to make a spreadsheet to sort this stuff out for me -it's been a learning process! lol

A 50:1 ratio is not hard to maintain, by any means. But, posting a list where nearly a quarter of the users are blacklisted really doesn't appeal to me. :( I think 100:1 pretty much weeds out all the users who are clearly savewhoring, not just happening to miss out on what few blams are available. We'll see how things go in the future, in regards to lowering the ratio.

Well, that's IMHO, anyways! ;)

Chocolate takes priority over B/P?! FOR SHAME!

I think I'm the only one here who will say otherwise.

Wait, I'm confused. Sex does not feature in this list...

Sex = Money + Chocolate + B/P points. Simple. ;)

That cannot be right. I have tens of thousands of B/P points, I've got a new job, which means even more money, plus I can (and frequently do) buy chocolate in reasonable quantities.

But no secks.

Wat doo?!

You're doing it WRONG!

First you get the money to buy choclate. Then you get B/P points while eating the choclate you bought from the money you got. Then you get bored with it plus you notice you are getting out of shape (because of all the choclate). Then you decide to do something against it, so you go out more. When you go out, you'll meet girls (or guys, whatever floats your boat). Which in turn means: Secks.

First you get the money to buy chocolate.

Ok..I have a job (or two)..so far, so good

Then you get B/P points while eating the chocolate you bought from the money you got.

Right on schedule here...

Then you get bored with it plus you notice you are getting out of shape (because of all the chocolate).

Wait..bored? Bored of B/P or chocolate? Never. You are now in the realm of fiction... besides, I am in shape - ROUND IS A SHAPE!

Then you decide to do something against it, so you go out more.

No I don't. Besides, that big orange, glowing ball in the daytime sky scares me and hurts my eyes.

When you go out, you'll meet girls (or guys, whatever floats your boat).

Ummm...only if they are at the gas station or Stop & Shop

Which in turn means: Secks.

I've never had secks at the gas station or Stop & Shop...in fact, it's been....damn...too long. Don't get me wrong, secks is good - but it's hard to b/p when someone is on top of you yelling "ride'm hard, rawhide!".

Besides, at my age, too much secks could break something important...I'll leave that to the younger, more limber members of this fine group.

Now, back to my chocolate and B/P'ing...

Step three: FAILED! :P

Round may be a shape, but if you sit around the house and you are sitting AROUND the house... well, then it's too late. ;)

Then you decide to do something against it, so you go out more.
No I don't. Besides, that big orange, glowing ball in the daytime sky scares me and hurts my eyes.

Well, what do you expect, you already failed at step three.
Besides, there is a time when that big bright thing isn't there anymore.

When you go out, you'll meet girls (or guys, whatever floats your boat).
Ummm...only if they are at the gas station or Stop & Shop

There should be someone working there...

Which in turn means: Secks.
I've never had secks at the gas station or Stop & Shop...

I didn't say you should have sex right where you meet your "significant other".

in fact, it's been....damn...too long. Don't get me wrong, secks is good - but it's hard to b/p when someone is on top of you yelling "ride'm hard, rawhide!".

It would be funny to watch, though.

Besides, at my age, too much secks could break something important...

There never is a "too old" for sex. Besides, I think that you are younger than me. >_>

Now, back to my chocolate and B/P'ing...

Go get 'em tiger!

Something to keep in mind about blacklisting: submissions that get blammed disappear over time. This should be intuitive, as the act of blamming them necessarily removes them from the portal. That means it's possible to not get any blams simply by viewing the portal at the wrong time. My voting habits have recently changed due to a lack of time so that I generally only look at 5 portal submissions a day, and while I've been going out of my way to look for ones that will be of low quality, if I happen to pick 5 that pass each time, I'm going to have a 0:x blam:save ratio.

My point is to be mindful of the fact that people with low numbers of saves and no blams are not necessarily savewhores, they may just be getting unlucky. If you're going to do reflexive blacklisting, there should be a not-public-knowledge minimum number of saves required in addition to a given ratio. I think something around 5 x number of days since last update is reasonable, but I also think the exact number should be a secret so that it cannot be exploited in any way.

Deploy the... it's a yellow button... it's usually flashing... it makes the engines go... whoosh!

Please help fund my horror novel. I'll love you forever.

We had actually already discussed that same issue in this thread and determined that users who earn less than 150 b/p per month (or 5 per day) are exempt from blacklisting.

Thanks for showing interest; it's always appreciated.
