reading the html and testing for elements that would logically assume that it would be a pass/balm still has a wide margin of error.

I think you misunderstood, the high success rate is ONLY for saves. There is no analysis of HTML or attempt to judge the quality of the submission. The bot merely votes 5 on everything and never votes 0.

well now that you mention it, icean does have only 24 blams which would suggest that.

Yes, I think it is a "vote 5" program that is being run on the account. I would be willing to bet that if you added up all the flashes that passed in the last week, and then looked at Icean's increase in saves, it would the same number. It is a program running 24-7, and somehow submitting a "5" click on every flash that hits the portal.

I've had my busy days where I did quite a bit - Casualty's Portal Guard is a great little tool. But I do sleep once in a while, and I can't keep up with that vote-bot pace.

Although I think that voting 5 on everything blindly via a program defeats the purpose of the review process, I am curious as to exactly how the vote-bot works - and who wrote it. More importantly, what if we see more accounts running the same program later, if Icean shares it with his cohorts?

I wonder if we could ask Wade or Tom for a new feature in the next generation of NewGrounds - call it "V-Bot (V = Validate)". It would scan through all the accounts, and check for activity outside of simple voting, such as reviews, submissions, forum responses, etc. If it found an account that had no activity (besides voting) for say 30 days, it would PM the user for verification and response. If the user did not respond in a week, the account would go "inactive" and require an e-mail from the owner to Wade or Tom to request that it be reinstated. It would be considered an "abandoned" account. Also, it would nudge people to be more involved - join a forum or review a flash or do something to help the community a bit. Whoever is running the vote bot would have to do more than just vote - or else the account shuts down. Just an idea - but no matter what, regardless of how far Icean goes, it will always be with an "asterisk" - it really doesn't count...

If someone went to all of the trouble to create a bot to vote five on submissions, I would suspect that they would log in at least once per month.

The only real solution is to go back to the system that was in place in the past, users were "flagged" for always voting five or zero on submissions and the appropriate actions were taken because they were clearly not voting on the merits of the submissions. This was in place a real long time ago.

That is the case as you can see in my post above. He did catch every save available from 11 days ago until now.

Not a bad idea, but I think it might start to piss people off after a while. There are loads of people like Pimp who do nothing but depositing their experience every day. I know validating once a month wouldn´t take that much effort, but there are also people who leave NG for a while or go on a holiday and have someone else deposit their exp. They can´t even deposit anymore unless they create a new emailadress and all that stuff. In the end, I think it´s gonna lead to lots of complaints and the admins will keep getting bothered with people asking to unlock their accounts. So perhaps not the best solution.

By the way, I thought bots usually got intercepted by the admins. I know they used to update older stat lists, like the old reviewers list, using bots. But the admins asked to take them down because they screwed up the site or something, or so I´ve heard. So if icean really uses a bot, I think they´re gonna notice sooner or later.

Great research on the subject but I might have to disagree with the multiple persons monitoring the account theory. It has to be a bot given your evidence to suggest it is. Why they've got this bot and aren't using other aspects of newgrounds is odd, I mean why wouldn't they come in here to gloat about their 'awesome' stats?
Hm. I'm just surprised some of the more experienced programmers on here haven't tried to create some sort of bot.
I came across this when I did a little research of my own.
Interesting, no?

True, it could have been modified. I'm not sure why someone would just do that for the numbers - but then again, you can't always tell what goes through the mind of a kid with too much time on their hands. As for one of the programmers here building another vote-bot - well, in theory, maybe they could, but that just takes all the fun out of being here. I think that anyone who is smart enough to figure out a new vote bot is also mature enough not to do it - it's a matter of "not cheating".

Besides, it's much more satisfying clicking that "0" button yourself when you just wasted a minute of your life on a piece of trash - or upvoting an excellent flash that really deserves front page. It's the satisfaction of knowing you did the right thing.

I know nothing about programming but I cannot imagine that this would be hard. The bot would merely be programmed to visit "http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/4 80XXX etc. and submit the five vote which I am sure is just another URL that could be found rather easily be looking at the source code.

Okay, you made me curious. I just looked at the source code for the flash page, and for the URL on the vote buttons. I was expecting a simple button or link that could be triggered. Not so. Seems that there is a series of Java-script modules and some runtime encoding that randomly change the IDs and references - and the actual voting depends on calling the Javascript module with the right parameters. Every time a new flash is set up, these parameters are different. I managed to hand-trace how it works - it's very dependent on Java runtime, and not HTML.

Looks like the designers at Newgrounds went to great lengths to make that voting system "anti-bot". It will take more than simple "scan html and find a button" logic here. Now I'm really curious - just how did they pull this vote-bot off? Or are they going about it a different way?

Maybe the bot just litereally visits the site by opening the page in a browser, then looks for the voting bar (which is always located underneath the text "Click an icon to vote on this!") and just clicks on the 5th element from the left. Which is the "Vote 5" button.

I mean, it's possible to program bots for video games like diablo, so programming a bot to vote on a website shouldn't be harder than that.

I'll have to wait until the news media dies down, can't believe they would make a big deal over a gambling win. I have to sneak to the hospital to give one of the girls a senzu bean I found, I gave it to Tsukasa since she's in even worse shape, I'll try to find that martial art expert with supernatural powers to save the other one.

Since the actual html/java is complex, your idea does make sense. Load the "http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/4 80XXX", wait X number of seconds (whatever the amount for a 15MB submission max would be, maybe 30 seconds) and then click in a preset area (for example, the X,Y coordinate of 150, 750, or whatever is necessary for the vote 5 button.)

So any programmers out there, possible? I now for a fact that you could set an auto clicker to click every X number of seconds so I think we are learning that this is more and more plausible.

At what point do we plan on approaching a mod about this, if ever?

That´s indeed very suspicious. That after 4 years of no posts, some guy suddenly shows up saying "that was the program I was looking for". And a little over a month later someone suddenly joins this list catching 100% of the saves every week.

I am starting to think that the bot theory is more likely as well now... =/

Now at least, I'll be able to overtake him and regain the place that was taken due to his obscenely fast protecting; there's no point calling it b/ping for someone who never blams, is there? Personally, I doubt that we're going to see too much of him again given the fact that it's going to be nigh on impossible to justify that. I don't know, though, had I been in his shoes, I'd have done something to program in a limit for the number of points that he got per day. After all, had he been intelligent enough to program in a limit of 50 a day, that would have been easily enough to make some very respectable pace within the ranks, while not attracting suspicion by getting nearly every save possible. Likewise, programming in some way to vary the vote cast to get blams would have been a good idea - if it's below X kb, vote 0, if it's above X kb, vote 5. Granted, I'm no programmer, and this is pure conjecture on my part, but that's what I'd think to be a better way to run a bot like that.

What a day yesterday, I saw a huge blue earless cat in the alley sleeping

There I reach into his pouch and pull out a mini-propeller with a suction cap, I put it onto my head and began to fly

I flew to Frau's house and saw it attacked by bunch of goons, because I drank a energy drink earlier...I kind of gotten hyper

I took off the propeller and fell on one of the goons, after that I took his gun and began to fire away missing every shot but they eventually fled...most of them anyway

I ran into the house and grabs two plungers, tied them together to create nunchukus and then I recklessly popped out of the door owning every thugs in sight, they would then try to escape through yacht until I fired an energy blast at the boat and blew them up. Konata came impressed and said "Good job!" as I came down with energy crash. It was crazy and suddenly someone came up behind us and heard a gun cocking when few shots was heard, I turned around and saw the thug fell to the ground.

Dragon came just in time with NEVR, glad they did or otherwise we'd be in trouble

Frau Bow and Miyuki are okay as well

Still haven't find someone with a supernatural power to save Kagami yet, but right now I'm ready to watch Super Bowl, good thing Frau Bow's television have access to that channel

NEVR said that he's going to stay for a bit to watch the game as well

I'd like to say that all your speculations on icean were very interesting to read, although regarding that forum, icean must have started well before November, so that guy who posted in the old thread must be someone else.

I don´t know. He would´ve started using the bot in november and he would´ve only needed approximatly 7,000~8,000 BP´s then to have him enter around christmas. So it is still possible that it was icean, or maybe icean got it via the guy who posted there.

UPDATE 1st February 2009

Thanks for the great update Bahamut.

My pace was pretty good again. Idiot-Finder didn´t gain much on me. Gotta go back to university next week and my schedule is pretty bad, so Idiot-Finder might pass me before I pass Kolohe depending on how much free time he has.

Thanks for the update, Bahamut. Nice work with this 36th update :)

It's going to take me a few more updates before I can pass Voidist.

Looks like the debris from broken machines will be here for a while to stand testament to our own skills. Isn't it time for a cleanout, Tom?
