II managed to make it over the hump, MPA was saying how his avg was going to drop too. it went up by 3.

Yeah, there were more submissions than I had predicted. I didn't get to vote from 10am-3pm and still got 122 yesterday.

You're so lucky... i voted all day long yesterday... and got booted from just 6 to 9 and only got 83 bp points... 6 to 9 seems to be the prime time for voting.. and i'm going to miss it tonite and tommorrow... so sad...

I wonder if Denvish, good_guy_o, you or ramagi ever had a job before... cuz 100 a day is impossible for me.

And so the Top 50 shenanigans continue but they may have finally come to a close for a bit. Wayne managed to (barely) get past BVBG and would be in 50th, save for the small problem of staphita getting barely past him to take it. Quik, Rowe, and staphita appear to be on pace to get themselves well ahead of the "I'm-in-I'm-out-I'm-in-I'm..." games,

Top 50 again! Until I get a steady job at home, Dialup during the week and a real connection at home on the weekends . It suprised me to see all the movies submitted last night, hence a 97 avg. To stay in the top 50 would be great. And all the snow outside means stsying inside playing on the computer:-)

Hmm, maybe I'll start trying next week just for the hell of it. It's funny, I've been stalled behind Marcus at #125 for like 4 days now, but now that he's moved up a few spaces I can hopefully go up a bit by tomorrow. I'm done with my english exams so I have no more classes first thing in the morning, which hopefully means I'll be able to start getting 100/day weeks again.

15 January: Well, let's get it over with; the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good: SK recoded the Data Miner to allow it to not only pull the profiles this week, but with greater adaptability for any future changes to profile layout. Denvish also has written a Profile Grabber which works effectively as well. Between the two and their programs, the no man's land between when James makes a change to profile layout and when we have a program that can read the new layout should be minimal. Per gfoxcook (see his second big post on the page for *cough*skimpy*cough* details), James has indicated that he will be changing the way NG lists users and expanding the official lists offered by the site.

The Bad: Apparently I was right to fear that overuse of the DM would cause problems, because even the lists in use now are apparently doing so. In my case, I pull over 4400 PIDs (each of which are individual html pages) from NG every week, and this is in addition to the normal load NG carries just by people watching flash and playing around on the BBS, so you can see how the issues add up. ~shrug~ The problem is prompting the changes to the NG official lists, so maybe this is actually a Good. Profiles are supposed to undergo a number of changes in the near future. These alterations will likely occur in stages, rather than all at once, prompting multiple issues with the lists in extant.

The Ugly: The implementation of these changes is targetted to make all (most?) of the current lists obsolete. Ugliest of all, is that we don't have the faintest idea when these will be implemented, nor what changes are actually planned. Unless NG changes the way in which it records user information, as well as changing profile layout, the chances of this whole thing actually making the lists obsolete are essentially nil. The likely result is that these changes will make it well nigh impossible for any of us list makers to make our lists, while leaving large chunks of the information you folks like out.

Personally, I would love to see the EGRL fall into obsolescence. The reason I started keeping track of people, and ultimately started posting the information, was that I didn't have the foggiest idea who was ahead of me in BPs and by how much. If there is no reason for the EGRL to exist, I have zero problems in walking away from it ... although for the next several months I'll still be periodically snapping awake at 4am muttering, "gotta do the stat pull." The fear I have is that these changes will merely be expansions of the current official lists, stating rank, name, and total, with no attempt at tracking any changes in the ranking or total ... so consider this my plea to James. People like to see what they have now, but what they really enjoy is seeing what they've done over the last X time frame. The simplest method would be to set mark points at the start of the NG "day" (recalc time of 4:45am EDT/EST) and have additional columns on the pages reflect any changes of the user from that mark point. Time frames should be either one week, two weeks, or one month, rather than the "easiest" version of daily changes.

I'll write-up some huge farewell speech if when, one becomes necessary. In the worst case scenario, I'll see about trying to recode the spreadsheet to at least manage to put out a B list of some sort. I've either got the option of spending 10 days coding a new spreadsheet layout (I'll take bets on how many =IF statements I'll have to write per user sometime next week), or taking 6 hours fixing cell referents every time I go to post. Neither of these is really high on my list, so we can only hope James takes my suggestions.

Completely unknown is whether or not these "new lists" will include the information now portrayed on the Submission Stats site. Yes, it hasn't been updated in a while, but I still haven't received any information from Mike so I can't do a heck of a lot with it :-P~~~ Anyway, one of the stutters in actually following through on that project was that James announced, in August, 2003, that they were considering supplying that information to us. As you can surmise by its absence, that feature never got off the ground. Chances are that we will continue to run that site, if for no other reason than it's not actually done yet and I don't like leaving unfinished business behind me.

On to the list:

Yes, there is much to contemplate there. While I can understand why the admin don't reveal their plans to the masses, it can be a little annoying to only be consulted/notified after the event - it's probably a stupid thing to say, but it would be nice if the Wi/Ht people could be somehow involved in the progression of NG as a site. Also, James needs a helper of some description... every time I speak to him, he just seems snowed under...
Thanks for the update. Any chance (don't feel obliged) that you could run another 'days to EGSC' at some point?
Also, did you get my latest email (about v2)? Hopefully that'll help things along a bit

That's great :) Good job to both of them.

James has indicated that he will be changing the way NG lists users and expanding the official lists offered by the site.

I honestly how it will be done and how much these changes will affect the users and the lists of whereis/howto regulars/members. Which lists will be implemented and which ones will be modified (all of them? :O) ?

The Bad

I don't like the way it sounds :(

The Ugly: The implementation of these changes is targetted to make all (most?) of the current lists obsolete. Ugliest of all, is that we don't have the faintest idea when these will be implemented, nor what changes are actually planned.

I guess that could my question above. I really doubt that there will be an official top blammers, top saviors, top posters (DUH) lists. Even an extended top reviewers list probably won't happen :) Although, likemost of you typed several times, these changes will still partly affect these lists, that's fo shizzle :(

The likely result is that these changes will make it well nigh impossible for any of us list makers to make our lists, while leaving large chunks of the information you folks like out.

That's a horrible fate. I really hope it turns out differently or at least that some of you find a way to continue some of your lists without being obliged to torture yourselves. Hopefully, the lists included into NG will contain more information than I think they will (I really doubt it and the details is the main reasons why I prefer the whereis/howto lists). :(

People like to see what they have now, but what they really enjoy is seeing what they've done over the last X time frame.

Nobody can deny that fact. All statswhores love to see detailed information.

The Ba just crossed past 21 yesterday, so you're in good shape.

It's not stupid. gfox spoke his piece during his Pentalist update (please make a VP list), while I spoke mine during this update (please track changes). We may be better off simply starting up a thread to make it easy for James to track down all of our suggestions. We'd just need a mod to keep an eye on it to cut out the usual drivel that will find its way in, ala, "y duz peeps get 2 vote when dey hav no flash"

Thanks for the update. Any chance (don't feel obliged) that you could run another 'days to EGSC' at some point?

Sure, why not.

Also, did you get my latest email (about v2)? Hopefully that'll help things along a bit

Yes, but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. Heck, they even got a ~36 hour respite from me forgetting to start up again after a reboot.

At 1/15/05 03:45 PM, EKRegulus wrote:
I don't like the way it sounds :(

I tried to cover the most likely situations, but there's bound to be a few more of each out there that do occur that I didn't mention.

I really doubt that there will be an official top blammers, top saviors, top posters (DUH) lists. Even an extended top reviewers list probably won't happen :)

The reason for all of these lists is that we can't see further down the rankings than top 10 or 50. If James is trying to eliminate our need for usage of the DM or PG, he will have to extend them. The pages are created at ~4:35am, with profiles being updated at 4:45am, so chances are pretty good that any expansion will simply continue that process rather than being dynamically created to reflect ongoing changes.

Top Posters list, although liked by some, is just asking for trouble, so the likelihood is that there won't be one, although it's still possible. I mentioned it simply because it's another of "the lists."

You're likely right that Top Blams/Saves lists won't be created, but if he's making a VP list, they could join the lists. Doing so should be a fairly easy process, but even if "by stat" lists show up, it's extremely unlikely that "by %" lists will come along for the ride.

That's a horrible fate. I really hope it turns out differently or at least that some of you find a way to continue some of your lists without being obliged to torture yourselves.

If there's a list expansion, what will end up happening is that pages will generate (similary to the EGRL, XP list, and TL) that simply show the ranks, names, and totals.

SK and Denvish could easily rewrite their programs to pull from them for ramagi or I, say data off 30 pages of 50 profiles instead of pulling 1500 pages, but the problem would arise due to the (relatively) dynamic nature of the pages. I could easily show the rate of change of the person ranked 600. The problem is that who is 600 now is not who was 600 last week.

Presuming the new NG lists are simply extensions of the information given now, my options to track changes in rank and totals are limited ... and none are good.

The simplest of all solutions is simply to drop it entirely. You folks won't like it because there's the lack of information. I don't like it, because it's a challenging problem I know I can solve.

The "old way" I had been doing things was to manually go through the cell referents fixing them to reflect the people, not the rank. At roughly an hour per 300 profiles, it's a pretty bad way of doing things.

Another option I have is to write out a series of formulae that would cause the spreadsheet to read the name, then compare it to everyone else on the list, spitting out the change when it finds a match. This would require one cell to be written for everyone on the list and that entire set of cells used with everyone on the list, plus a series of cells to consolidate that information. For just this past update, I would need ~7 million cells (~1.7m per variable plus organizational cells) compared to the 165,000 I used this week. If I don't mind having 4GB+ spreadsheets, it's not great but it's still viable.

The most feasible is probably to simply change the way the spreadsheet works and drag my way of thinking along with it. Rewriting the macros and cell codes to manage an alphabetized list, rather than one that works by rank, would be the best way to go. Technically, it wouldn't require much work to alter it, while also setting it to be able to post it based on numeric criteria, but recalibrating my head to think about it alphabetically is going to be an exercise in futility.

Lastly, my final option is to go out and buy (and learn) Access. Rewriting the spreadsheet like above is essentially just a way of setting up a relational database, keying the formulae to the names rather than the rank. The real problem with this is that I'm utterly devoid of experience with the program. Not only do I not know how to get it to do what I want, I don't even know that it can do what I want. Even if it can get things organized as I wish, can it put it into an easily postable format? There's just too many unknowns for me to take this way seriously.

Looks like we have a nice race for EGSC. :)

Yoink's indicated that he's trying to make 28k before school, so he'll likely "stall" somewhat and take a bit to get there. moongod, X-Naut, Syme, and good_guy_o are also in the hunt for SC as well. There's going to be a lot of big boosts to the top end of the VP list over the next couple of months as people hit General and SC =)

70 is still the minimum pace, not 80. The next person after Maximus was Orcmors at 66, so there's just a big gap of no one to post, not my opting to increase the minimum.

This is what I get for working out the races this morning, before I even finished my first cup of coffee ... Somehow I looked at:

23580
23273
22289

and thought they were close. ~shrug~ It won't show up the rest of the week.

Yeah, I wasn't even considering the fact that the lists wouldn't include PIDs, and that you'd have to go by names. I can see how that would create problems.

Thanks for the update. Spent most of yesterday playing Sinjid SOTW, didn't seem like I got that many points along the way... good start to the week.

I read everything, who knows what/when things will start happening.

The usual users, as usual, are up to their usual tricks:
Denvish 129.29/day
MPA 110.29/day
ramagi 106.43/day
good_guy_o 106.29/day

I was going to incorporate "usual" into this part of the reply to "be funny" but decided against it. It's good to know I can still Tri-Gold this semester though.

I see my alter ego did really well yesterday. I did pretty good as well considering I didn't even get back home until 6pm. So I'm happy.

Days to 50:
75.06 - BonusStage

Hey, not bad, not bad at all. I'd love to get in in a few months, too bad the chances of that are slim to none. ;-;

Races:
39-42
119 --- 140 -- BonusStage

Oh woah! I'm in the top 50 already and I'm going into it? Awesome. ^_^

*gives alter ego high 5* Another person we've messed up. ;)
