Thanks, My problem is whenever somebody submits a link I automatically assume their clear about the review guidelines and worry that if I don't flag it, it'll get deleted and I'll lose my chance!
I just get a wierd feeling in the back of my head that soon there will be no more abusive reviews left and we'll be stuck with whatever we've got!
see, you are looking at this from a totally selfish point of view. We have the flag system to help stop abuse from happening. I can't do anything about a user making abusive reviews if I don't find out about it until a year later. If you guys flag new stuff from today and there's obviously a user who is making abusive reviews, I can ban him and hopefully he'll catch the drift and not do it again. If I don't see it for a year, he'll just keep spewing the abuse for the whole year and think nothing of it because it hadn't been deleted yet and he hadn't been banned yet.
The whole system is to help NG out, not get you some sparkly gold whistle to stroke your e-penis with. That's why nobody (except for maybe liljim) knows how the sytem works. It was curved for a while, then it was stagnant and god knows how it works now. I don't even know how much power a certain whistle level gives you, I'm as in the dark as everyone else, and it's the same for the rest of the review moderators and probably everyone but whoever created the system.
Isn't their anyway to waiver this new reviews only rule?
I think you guys are taking this a bit out of proportion. I feel that somebody must have taken something out of context.
You aren't penalized for flagging old reviews, but at the same time you won't get any points out of it either. We are simply asking you to ignore them.
The main reason for this is what I stated above; we want to keep abuse from happening. What's the point of me deleting all of the reviews from a user who hasn't even been to the site in 5 or 6 years? I can't ban him, and maybe he started making good reviews after a while anyway...so just magically one day his inbox is flooded by M-bot because of something he did YEARS ago. If you think about it, generally people don't spend much more than a few months on the site before they move on to someplace else.
Also, the review guidelines haven't been around the entire time. So back in 2001-2003 there wasn't even an idea of "abusive" with the reviews. Think of it sort of how youtube comments are like now (or maybe a year ago, I never go there). You can basically say whatever you want and there aren't any rules for what you can say. That's what the reviews were like back then. So since there wasn't a set outline of what is acceptable, we aren't really in the moral highground to justify deleting something from back then.
I consider this matter closed. It's very simple: pay attention to the dates, don't bother with the old ones because it wont help or hurt you in any way, except get another review mod in this topic trying to tell you the same thing I and others have posted in here plenty of times. So, if you continue to bitch about it, it'll be considered off topic and a BBS mod may need to step in. This topic was locked once a month or so ago, if you all remember and it's because people were cheating the system and generally being more worried about what picture of a whistle they had in their userpage than how many morons they helped stop from abusing the system.
man, that looks like a rant. It's not, but you guys seem to ignore everything the review mods have said and always demand more info. there's all the info you need.
In short: no, we won't rethink it. it's that way for the above mentioned reasons. Stop complaining, you've got snot running down your shirt.
