First let me say im not a racist. I recently took a police test in NY I won't say for what area but it was not the state test. I got %98 right, passing is %70. After you take the written and pass it you get put on a list. The higher you are on the list the quicker and better chance you have of getting hired. My friend who is a hispanic female got a 72. As I said earlier i got a 98, I was ranked 684 on the list. She was ranked 213. I mean what is the point of me taking a cival service exam if that is going to happen. To me that is complete and utter bullshit, thank you president Clinton.

Amen to that brother! Likewise, I too don't consider myself a racist, but I believe that affirmative action is bullshit. It proves that the government on all levels is unable to deal with racism caused by the small percentage of the population that is still racist. Also, it's reverse discrimination on white men and therefore makes it unconstitutional.

im glad the first response i got wasn't being flamed. I feel that the whole point of a cival service test is to see who is most qualified. If she got a 99 then she deserves to be ahead of everybody else.

When you can get more points on the Univ. of Michigan's entrance requirements by being of a minority than you can get by distinguished community service, a 4.0 GPA or an outstanding admissions essay, then you can certainly cheat a civil service test by being of the right minority.

lol, I've thought of that at times, im actually one quarter native american (cherokee) but i just put down that I am caucasian, although you don't have to put what ethnicity you are it does benefit you if you are a minority and you put down that you are.

I agree completly, affirmative action is a load of bullshit which puts minorities in places above whites even if they are less qualified. I'm all about having the best person for the job, white, black, female, I don't care as long as they score the best then they deserve the job, not because they are a minority.

The University of Michigan is full of shit too, to hell with them and their racist policies, why not just take the most qualified people? Its crap, nobody deserves anything just because they are one race or the other. Its like for me to expect blacks to give up their seat on the bus because I'm white, its a load of crap.

lol i've thought of that at times, im actually 1/4 native american (cherokee) put I just put down caucasion, because i can't prove to them that i am native american and i don't look like it. You don't have to put down what ethnicity you are, but if you do and your a minority it benefits you greatly.

Yeah, it confuses me how in a country/world where racism is not tolerated nearly as much as it used to be, something like that is still in effect. For example on some radio stations i hear black hosts making fun of white people and nobody cares, but god forbid a white person makes fun of a black person on the air, they would be destroyed. I don't have any problems with any minorities, I have friends of all nationalities and ethnicities, im just tired of racisim being reversed.

Seriously, white people are really reaching when they start complaining about how put upon they are. Minorities have been kept down and discriminated against for centuries in this country, but the REAL injustice here must be that white people don't get to make up 99.9% of universities and decent jobs.

I can see the thread starter's point about his score being compromised, but I doubt he grew up in a ghetto or some slum where most people either subsist on welfare, engage in criminal activity to make a living, and/or end up in jail. Affirmative action is designed to raise the lower-class minorities up and make them contributing members of society - this improves the country for everybody.

I recently read an article about affirmative action, although I can't remember where. The article interviewed many different "ethnic groups" about the practice. One black man said something like "It makes minorities look stupid, that they would need special help and privleges because they wouldn't be able to get the position on their own merit."

It's all wrapped up in the same ideal: All us white guys are safe, secure and, most importantly, RICH!!! After all, it seems Blair is in denial that people are poor (ever seen how we can massage every statistic going, so it doesn't look bad?), and America is portrayed as a classless society, just like some 50's sitcom.

I admire your view, but affirmative action is a response to the fact that egalitarianism is not reality. In a perfect world there would be no need to force employers and universities to grant access to minorities, but prejudice exists and always has.

Here's another thing. In 1993 my girlfriend came over from Poland with her family. They spoke only minor english (hello, bye, thank you etc..) they had extremely little money, no jobs, and no home. Her mother got her masters in education in 1998, is now a math teacher, her father is a mechanical engineer for a hospital near my house. They bought a home for $40,000 three years ago, it was barely standing now it's beautiful he did the whole house over. And they all speak English now. So tell me they weren't better off than anybody else, so why can't some of the minorities work like they did? I know some do work real hard but a lot are getting free rides.

Like he said above, keep trying and dont give up!! Try to apply for a govt. loan. Also you may be able to get a Pell Grant, but it wont go very far at UofM; the grant is $4,000 a year.
