I have windows XP installed and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to dualboot two OS's. Will installing vista make my xp run slower if I use xp? I have about 60 gb left on my harddrive.

Vista comes with a "partition resizer" that allows you to shrink the size of your XP partition. In my experience, dual-booting has never slowed down either of the operating systems.

From what I heard, vista ignores all your partitions and without any warning or notice, it formats the hard drive.
Maybe it recognizes XP. I only heard about it wiping Linux off your computer.

If I already have the vista file and I want to install it can I use Imgburn to create a fake drive and install it that way. If so what will happen?

Why would you want to keep XP?
Why not just stop being a pussy, make the switch, and deal with anything that might go wrong and/or small inconveniences.

True. It's supposed to be an upgrade. Even if there are a few bugs, if you have a good enough graphics card, make the switch.

No, it can recognize XP, because XP is on an NTFS partition. It wipes Linux off because Linux usually uses the Ext3 file system, which Windows can't natively recognize. Also, it destroys the Master Boot Record, so even if you installed it just over an XP partition, you would be unable to boot Linux without reinstalling GRUB.
To make it easier, I suggest just reinstalling XP, formatting the hard drive, and partitioning the drive into the partition sizes you want. Then, install Vista on the second partition. Either method will work, although using the resizer allows you to keep your files ( I still suggest backing up your files beforehand).

The "copy" has nothing to do with actually installing it. You have the option of entering a key at install, or you can enter one later on in Windows. If you don't, you will only have thirty days to use Windows before you need to purchase a key.

well... this sounds to me like a very bad idea.I'll tell you what i know about vista...IT SUCKS. unless you know exactly what your doing i wouldent do that there are just to many variables. I have talked to many people with vista they ALL have big problems, first of all 512MB of ram is hardly enough to play the system because it's always got macafee or something else messing you up and slowing you down, also their are almost no games that will work with vista except about 10 new games taht also need crazy system requirements and cost aboout 30-40 dollers each!......im sure that this can be a good system but even if your comp rocked and you had the money to spend on games then you would still have to wait as their just comeing out. this is what ive seen happen with a few vista computers, just make sure you have all that facts befor you get vista because me and my friends prefer XP and unless you need to(if theirs a problem then my advice is to stick with vista :)

Hahaha, it's so not worth pirating Vista. It's a horrible OS.
But if you really want to, it's not hard. Resize your current partition so you have room for vista, then install it to that partition like you would with XP. NTLoader will recognize both versions and give you a choice at boot time.
I dual boot vista (Came with my laptop...ugh) and Slackware 12.0 using the Grub boot loader. Works just fine.

ok, from someone that does use Vista, yes you can dualboot it, it automatically recgonizes XP and as long you use a differnet partition, you're safe.
:oh and don't worry, i'm using a not entirely legal copy too, someone already cracked the protection.
Note to self and all of you: Never ever judge anime from the censored english ones, they suck ass.
