"Cabal" by Clive Barker.

The main story is amazing and the small story "How Spoilers Bleed" at the end scares the shit out of me.

Read this book, to find the truth about many things. Like I did.

The "Dresden Files" series by Jim Butcher is pretty good. Most are 300-400 pages, and they're about a wizard living in modern-day Chicago. It's also a detective series, I suppose, but between all the vulgar, awesome jokes, and sexy vampires, it's hard to remember he's got a mystery to solve each book. I totally recommend that series with all my heart.

There's also the "Ender Quartet" by Orson Scott Card, which is science-fiction, but it really delves into many topics, like free will, the role of humans in the universe, religion, etc. Mostly psychological stuff, but easy enough to understand, and you learn a few things, but don't realize, since you're really deep into the books. Also, try the "Shadow Quartet" by said author. It's a parallel series to the "Ender Quartet" but it deals with politics and military instead of galactic affairs and other sentienent, intelligent species.
