Recently i went on a industrial engineering trip to BAE (British Aerospace Engineering), which builds battleships etc.

I was shocked to see the most security they had was a a single flabby security guard.

The only decent security they have is a Electric fence for gods sake. And then theres still the River Clyde someone could sail up.

Worrying isnt it?

Actually, can anyone tell me why terrorists don't target the means of production?

Apart from the obvious about a plane (it's worth more if it's in service and has passangers on it, for a start), but they never seemd to have targeted places like dockyards where warships (i.e. aircraft carriers) are built, and obviously when they're in service you have no chance of attacking the base, let alone when it's out at sea.

Surely what a terror cell should do is attack something like, say, a coal mine - they have attacked oil wells in Iraq, but not for some time. Why blow up a tank when a facotry 100 tanks can be made is obviously better, or the source of petrol for a batallion of tanks to patrol?

That's like taking an M16 clip and leaving the armory, with dozens of M16s, unscathed.

You have a good point about attacking the means of production , but you seem to be missing the point of this thread. We're not trying to come up with better means of terrorism , but rather ask why the secutity is so weak . And the reason they'd attack a ship is because its big and would most likely publicise the terror group's cause(s).

=D

The ships currently sitting in the aforementioned BAE Systems dock on the Clyde are practically useless mini-ships built under contract for a foreign power. I forget which country it was but the ships were built to a ridiculous set of specifications.

The average height of personnel in their navy is 5'4", so the ships were designed around that. Now the head of the country has decided he doesnt want the ships, so they are languishing at BAE on the Clyde under a maintenance contract.

It would probably be a relief to BAE if the ships were sunk!

Joking aside, BAE systems dont need masses of security at the moment, because there are no active development projects ongoing. There are no secret weapons systems on the docked ships, they cannot be casually hijacked and there is no live ammunition on the ships.

On a side note Im pleased to see Glasgow Airport has some fit looking police on duty. I work at the airport, so I can vouch for the fact that before the attack, the Airport police service consisted of 2 jeeps, with past-it old guys or fresh faced (but still lazy) recruits.

As of friday evening, armed patrols were keeping an eye on proceedings at the airport. Keep it up is all I say!

But they don't build battleships on the Clyde - shipbuilding in this country was essentially kille doff by Thatcher, so it's mostly repairs or smaller spec ships - not worth the planning and resources if it won't be much to hit. To my knowledge, shipyards have never been targetted by terrorr groups or any other group, even when they were a more relevant target 100 or so years ago.

A missile factory would be a far superior target on many levels - and those are secured to the eyeballs.

Not quite - the new type 44 destroyer, the first of its kind, is being built, and is in dry dock at present. and is nearly completed.

Oh - and its being built for the British Navy.

=)

Design and manufacture of new warships are done by BAE systems. particularry in Glasgow - its always been a shipbuilding area. ANd BAE systems has built and designed all curent Navy vessels.

So nyeh.

My understanding is that currently BaE are constructing War Vessels for Malaysia.

Had they been built for Biritsh Vessel security will undoubtedly be increased.

When im at sea we get roughly 1 NavWarning a month from the USCG saying they have found evidence that suggests terrorists are planning an attack using a hijacked merchant vessel.

I reckon the next major terrorist atrocite will involve shipping.
