I'm just gonna post my work in progress here.

It's Yang from Street Fighter III. The picture took me some time, as I haven't seriously drawn or colored on computer for a while. Still, it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. Gonna fiddle with the flesh and hair some more.

I'd like to see a HD version of lemmings (based from the sprites in the first few games with half a dozen pixels =P)

Anyways, I chucked up my drawing of Sam and Max, and I'm not the most artistic person in the world, so it was good practice for drawing in flash, as I've only just started using flash last week, and still learning my way around...
So, if anyone wants to tell me what they think of it, I'd appreciate it a lot.

the shape is all wrong, you need to blow up the actual sprite and and basically outline it. then go in and add details.

I liked it. It's pretty good for a first try. You should have added a few extra details though, like you did with his feet.

It looks good. I would like to see how the 1st draft is so I can actually critique it.

That is the first "draft". And it's better to give "critique" asap otherwise it'd be annoying to go back and fix stuff.

I meant that once it is done. Then if I see anything wrong I would note that. Right now I want to see some more shadin on the legs and sun spots in the hair.

I know the hair needs more defining (gonna try and fix that, which is why I said I was going to fiddle with it), and the legs aren't shaded (you might as well tell me that the sneakers need coloring, I mean seriously). The reason I posted the picture here before I finished is because it's crazy hard to change some things when the whole picture is done. When everything is shaded, it's not a "draft" anymore, it's the final product. By then if I need to change something it may affect other layers so much (in terms of contrast, color tones) that I might have to start from scratch.

Usually most people ask for critique on stages beginning from lineart, then solids and first shading (to ask for opinions on values and light source). I skipped those stages because most of the lineart is traced and the colors and light source are there in the sprite pic. I was actually looking for advice on how to shade the flesh so it looks more 3D and less plastic, if you know what I mean. But thanks for the comment anyway.

Excuse my double-post.

It looks good, but the cape looks wrong and goopy. I don't think the fabric would drape that way, in sprite world or in real life. Try enlarging the sprite to see, because the cape looks more convincing in it than in your version. The rest of it is fine, but to take it up a notch, like Some-Stupid-Idiot said, add more depth by giving it more than cell shading. Give it several more layers of darker color and maybe highlights.

Thanks man, I know I can't do any of the super tricky mindchamber type art, but I tried to add some stuff to it, a bit of light streaks to the suit, but they were too small in flash, and I didn't want it to just sit there and look ugly. But I'm happy with the "cartoony" look, I might be able to make my first flash one that isn't stick figures =/

The game is fun, point and click mystery adventure game, similar to Day of the Tentacle (someone did a Bernard pic from that game, which looks awesome!)

Anyway, this comp is looking so good. I feel sorry for the judges. There are so many good ones that are adding new layers to the original, and taking the characters to whole new levels.
