New Union Jack 2003-06-11 18:42:17 Reply

This is absolutely outrageous and pointless.

'Britain's national flag - the union jack - has been given the makeover treatment, in the hope of reflecting a more modern society.
It's become the marketing executive's remedy for any organisation's ills. From BT to BP, the Labour Party to the Lottery, hardly a business or institution has escaped the rebranding bug.

Now moves are afoot to redesign that most sacred of British hallmarks - the union flag.

A campaign is being launched to modernise the red, white and blue flag by adding a touch of black to reflect multicultural Britain in the 21st Century.

The proposed new flag is the work of Nigel Turner, an enthusiastic fan of the UK's transformation into a multiracial society over the past 50 years.'

Uh this is almost as bad is the multicolored money idea do we really need a flag telling us that a contry is racially diverse i mean wont we see that when we look at the people that live there.

No friggin way the union jack is getting changed! I love this flag; although it may be old, it is in no way old fashioned. Its a simple yet bieutiful design. I guess you can say its my favourite flag.

This new flag absolutely has no sense of taste. Add green in the top left corner to show that Britain gets grass in the spring as well and that beavers live in a lake. Also it would be modern to draw some other things on the flag, such as a Tequila bottle. Tequila, being a Mexican product will show that Britain is friends with Mexicans. Moreover pictures of drunk eskimos should be added as well. This will once again illustrate Britain's friendship with eskimos and will show that Eskimos like Mexicans, because they drank the tequila and got wasted.
Any more suggestions?

...that's going to give me nightmares. Now what it needs is a cartoony drawing of Blair and Bush to show we're friends after that whole revolutionary war thing - since people wouldn't know that if not for the picture. Then put yellow for the whole China thing...and a big smiley face with a crown to show you love your royals!

I've got to say, my love for the English is certainly taking a beating. Since when have they gone for public image anyway? Look at their teeth? [/sarcasm]

to tell you the truth i don't give a shit about our flag.. its only a fucking flag man. But all the same the new design kinda sucks.. but i think its got the black line in there to signify all the immigrants we have in our contry and all the people shouting assilum and stuff...

The origional flag was a combination of the british flags.. and i still is.. just with a black line aswell as a white showing our ethnic diversity.. thats probably why it's there..

then again i could be wrong.. and if i am i dont care.. cos it's only a fucking flag.

As for the coloured money thats differant sizes.. its better than loads of boring green bills.. that are all the same size... blind people can tell what note they are handing over by the size... and people can see can look at it and go... oooh so pretty.. then roll it up and snort a line of coke with it. and then unrole it and bend it and make the queen smile and frown and laugh at her

Perhaps they should change the flag to reflect Britain's effect on pop culture?

Just to let everyone know, that's a joke. I think the new design they've proposed is stupid, and I believe it mocks minorities. But that's just me.

you've got to be kidding me that they are even thinking about changing the Union Jack. flags don't normally change unless that country's been inavded and fell to its oppressors. and how in the depths of hell does black signify a more "cultural" UK? it's a big joke.

Haha, that's pretty funny. I wouldn't have suspected anything that amusing from the political crew.

I'm keeping my old style Union Jack on my wall next to the American flag.

They're just itching to change anything over 100 years old aren't they?

Well HK now has a new $10 bill, and it looks disgusting. It's small, purple, flashy and resembles Monopoly money. I tend to get rid of em ASAP...maybe it's a govt' measure to encourage spending!

Well I guess Britain now has not only the original White, Red and Blue people, but also Black people. Fascinating.

Why don't we just change all the flags of each nation so that they can "show the colors" of the people in that nation?

Stupid idea...

I think it could promote more discrimination that it could hinder. Adding black to the flag to represent people? Come on... we want to break "color barriers" not put them up.

I understand where your coming from, and I seriously haven't even thought about anything to do with the flag until I saw this article. It's not like I'm some unholy British traditionalist or anything. It's just the idea is so damn ridiculous; riCOCKulous if I may say so. Why does our flag, which is a combination of both the St. George Cross and Scottish Flag need black lines in it to symbolise the fact that there are a different races living in the UK? Surely there's different races living everywhere? I mean there must be black people living in China, or white people living in Jamaica? Why not change everybodies flags to show how 'culturally sound' we all are?
The guy who's proposed this said something like, 'If I put the Union Jack up in my garden, some people would take it as a racist symbol.' Who in the name of all that is holy would think that? And who would put up a Union Jack in their garden? Only somebody who is totally hooked up on the fact that they're 'British and proud of it' would do this. And only somebody with that state of mind would propose an idea as completely insane as this.

That's offensive to me. In my country we have a flag that is red white and blue, but I'm more of a custard cream complection except in the summer when I'm a bit more vanilla waffer color. It's very offensive that this is not on my flag, and I demand representation.

This can be summed up in one word: lunacy.

Thank god it is only the work of one man, and not Tony Blaiur's proposal, because then I might shoot him.

No I'm serious. I demand the Ameican flag be changed to red white blue and custard cream (Vanilla wafer in the summer), and Britian get some Blue people.

LOL except during international soccer matches. Then you REALLY have people coloured like their national flags.
