I must applaud you for having the balls to generalize like this. To say that only the religious do charitable work and help the weak is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard. There is evidence for both sides of the argument for and against creationism. I wouldnt get in to a christians faith if they didnt violate the speration of church and state, if they didnt try to convert me by coming to my door, if they didnt tell me they cry and pray for me to try and "save" me. shut the fuck up and mind your own bussiness and try and tolerate us more intellegent beings who see past the idea of a superman

I guess that could be possible. But we are talking about the same God that wanted some dude to sacrifice his own son to prove his undying loyalty to him.

No, we're talking about any god.
What we should really have is a god who punishes smugness. Man, THAT would catch a lot of people off guard.

Well the only people in here making complaints about atheists I'm sure believe in the same Judeo-Christian God, I guess I was wrong in insinuating you were talking about that same god.
But I'm sure you know what I'm taking about.

Yes, yes it would. Especially a god that punishes smugness and lame implicative comments.

Actually, that wasn't directed at anyone here. I just notice that most of the time, there's people on both sides of the debate (especially my fellow atheists, unfortunately) who are unbreably smug about their positions, and just think that everyone else is so incredibly stupid for not being enlightened in the same way that they are.
I suppose a smug-smackin' god is wishful thinking though. Ah well.

I think that the point of this topic point out that people like Christopher Hitchens, who i believe gives atheists a bad name. He is a person who thinks all people who believe in religion are backwards barbarians. To me he is the atheist version of Pat Robertson. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT EVERYDAY ATHEISTS ARE BAD PEOPLE. What it boils down to is tolerance.
AND FOR THE RECORD I'M NO CHRISTAN, I BELIEVE IN RELIGION IT SELF AND THAT IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HELP MANKIND

I donate to the homeless, and on Tuesday and Thursday tutor "troubled" elementary schoolers. For free. You do it cause you want into Heaven, or because a book tells you to.

Not true...Atheism/Agnosticism is something like 11% of the world, and Christianity is something like 70...those numbers aren't exact, I just remember reading them. However, atheism is the 2nd fastest growing "religion", right behind Islam.
The thing that interests me is Christians believe atheists to be selfish and unmoral, when the percentage of criminals per Christian, in the U.S. at least, is greater than per atheist. Atheism, in fact, is near the bottom of the list of "religions".
That said I don't mind Christians at all...let them believe what they want. They're ending will be better than ours, in their minds. Why take that away from them, even if we had the chance?
But please, don't try to enforce your moral code on the rest of us (i.e. gay marriage ban), and, like somebody before me said, stop pretending America was founded on Christianity.

Actualy, I'm pretty sure Christianity is about 1/3 of the world. Ofcourse, it depends on how you count. A lot of Christians like to shout about how Mormons or Catholics aren't Christians.

True, and they have a lower rate of divorse too. Funny how the thing atheist are accused of most are just things like that. I can think up a thousand things atheist is bad at, but being moral is not one of them.

Well, I would never want to take away somebodies faith away like that. But faith isn't harmless. All that fear that people have suffered though the last thousand years, all those people who has died, all that science and progress that has been halted. I'll always try to help people be a little more critical of their faith, even if I can't convince them.

I'd admire an atheist who descided he had became an atheist for the sheer fact that religon couldn't provide him the mental backing for justifications of morality.
I just hope i don't end up becoming a statistic.

Ahh you're right, my 70 figure was for America only. According to wikipedia, Christianity is 33%, atheism 13%. I was still right about atheism/agnosticism being less common than Christianity.

Yep.
Another thing that pisses me off about Christians is they think they are always being persecuted. I've heard MANY people say that the term "Xmas" is an attempt to take the word "Christ" out of "Christmas". I actually heard that in a church, back when I was 13 or so and my parents forced me to go to church. And then they make huge chain bulletins about "if you aren't afraid to say you love God sign and repost this". What Christian is afraid to say they love God? You're a fucking majority (in the US)!

I think he is talking about that unless a super sky daddy created the universe, it was a coincidence.
The fact is, nobody can give your life purpose but YOU. If you decide to follow the teachings of scripture, then that is perfectly okay, but, it is still YOU who decide that you are going to follow it, not some omnipresent being. YOU decide what you want to use your life to, YOU decide to use it to please God(s). No matter how you look at it, YOU decide to do it, just like an atheist decides to live life for something.
To accuse those who don't dedicate their lives to exactly the same thing as you only shows that you are ignorant. I don't care what you use your life for. I don't give a frack over what you decide to spend your life on. Just don't try to force me to do the same, or try to limit society and science with your dogma.

Not to take away from your post, but most historians say that the Catholic Church actually did a good job preserving society and furthering science.

Erm what evidence? It was my understanding that there is evidence suggesting theories that are against religious belief.
Sure go ahead and live life in a manner that I think is blind.
Shows how much you know
However dont keep crying about how dumb those of us with faith are, about what evil religion has caused. For all the ills that religions have caused over time it is done more good
Yes Queen Mary killing all those thousands of people who were'nt Catholic caused how much good?
It gives hope and a meaning to life.
I have hope and a simple yet perposful meaning to life yet I'm not religious.
Because of religion many peoples lives have been turned around for the better.
Proof please.
Also do you see any atheists feeding the poor or sheltering the homeless?
Probably?
Nope and ya dont see people taking care of others in the name of nothing do you? Now I may be a pagan with more or less my own belief system and yea I am not a big fan of many sects of the Abrahamic religions but I respect them enough to say that thier belief might just be valid... for them that is.
By making this thread you are imbarassing pagans LOL
I dont go around trying to prove how dumb what they believe is.
No, but you do it to Athiests?
Unless they say some seriously dumb ass shit
Like you are saying now??
I mean hey I am human. So please atheists wake up and leave those of us that find meaning in something alone and go back to your blind hollow exsistance.
I've have never attacked a religious culture unless they started the argument, like you are doing now.

Of course, I've never said otherwise. But, If I first stopped you from getting hurt, and later on hurt you, would you be okay with it? I don't think that good actions cancel out bad actions. Even if Christianity was the very platform and reason why we exist today, it doesn't give it a nudge of a right to be abusive and limiting today.
