Eh, I wouldn't say that. I don't think it makes sense to base a genre off of how many years it has been around, because then it won't really be it's "own" genre. Like, take Pink Floyd and Alice in Chains. Completely different, right? So how would they fit into the same genre? It doesn't really make sense. Also, would you say that once it turns 2020, that the 2000s' music is classic rock? Nah, it doesn't really make sense. All I'm saying is, that a band's genre should be based off of the way it sounds, not categorizing it into a different-sounding genre just because of the present year. If that makes any sense.

Also, on that note, why aren't classic rock sounding bands categorized as classic rock, just because they weren't around in the 70's?

Care to elaborate on what "underground" music you listen to? I'm sure someone in here has heard of something of yours.

Also, Spoon. Strange band, eh?

Stuff like The Electronic Hole, Relatively Clean Rivers, and Group 1850.
I'd say Love or The Zombies, but they were never really underground,
they're just not as well known today.

I see what you're saying and I agree now that I think about it. But I also think that Classic Rock is more of a term to describe the early periods of Rock, than an actual genre with a specific sound. In other words, you can't pick up an instrument and start playing what would be the recognizable sound of classic rock. There were many different styles and sounds that artists used in the '50s/'60s/'70s that are today all labeled as Classic Rock. When at the same time Pink Floyd, like you mentioned's sound is completely different from a band in the same era, as The Troggs.

I'm loving Hair of the Dog. Really underrated great classic rock song. It has awesome guitar, an awesome chorus, great vocals, loads of cowbell, and a talk box. What's not to love?

Good point. So it's kind of a mixture of a genre and a time period. Gotchya.

But, I still can't see grunge or even 80s hair metal bands being considered classic rock, even though there was still classic rock going on in the 80s. Soo... that's that I guess.

Also, here's some fillers because there's too much quoted in this post. :)

Well after I read what you said I meant that I agreed with what you said about the Years not reflecting on bands being "classic rock".

Also do you listen to Classic Rock radio stations? I used to until Mp3 players became popular, it seems like GOOD radio is becoming obsolete now.

There used to be one great classic rock radio station where I lived, but it got turned into the generic rap / pop station. There's still one, and they usually play classic rock, but not always. I dropped my mp3 player in the toilet by accident a little while back, but I still have my old iPod from 4 years ago. It holds like 2 gigs, and it cost me 200 bucks at the time. It was the original nano. But, I like the one radio station when I work. Other than that though, I'll just listen to my pitiful 500 songs.

Sounds like you're talking about k-rock. I guess they got canceled all across the country then, it's a shame. I don't even get howTop40 hits are considered "better" music for the radio than rock or actual good music.

hahahaha that funny, I hope you atleast dropped it before you used the toilet. I still have the iPod mini which is great to use exclusively for my car now that there isn't any radio.

This is pretty much shameless advertisement, but I know that a lot of people who like classic rock also like art rock, and I just made an art rock club a little while ago, so if anyone in here wants to join up, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

Swing and a miss.

Anyways, I've really been getting into more softer classic rock. Stuff like this kinda. Like, sure I'll throw a Deep purple CD in once in a while, but I'm listening to more and more "chill" songs, which also work good while stoned. Anyone else know any good chill-out songs. Like, right now I'm listening to Hendrix's slower stuff like Wind Cries Mary, Floyd (obviously), the doors, grateful dead, CCR, etc.

Last night, a car dew up outside my house. It was pumping music very loud. Join Together by The Who was just winding it up and they skipped it!

Then I'm Free starts up. They don't like that either. Surprise, surprise, they keep on Pinball Wizard!

People who skip tracks on a studio album should be sent to concentration camps and be forced to listen to complete albums.

It should be the same for people who only buy greatest hits albums. Those two things irritate me the most when it comes to music listening. Today's hip young people need to understand the value and beauty of an album, but iTunes, illegal mp3s, and singles just promote a hit song and the rest of the album is just filler. Lame.

I mostly agree with you on the whole greatest hits thing. Except many of my favourite songs were originally released only as a single and were not on the studio album, so a Greatest Hits is often the only place to get those songs.

But single downloads are a sin.

Do you guys have a couple of classic rock songs you hear on the radio that you just have to blast as loud as possible as you sing along and you know the drums, bass, and guitars perfectly you can replicate them with your voice? Sunshine of Your Love by Cream is just one of them baby.

Speaking of Cream, I love blasting SWLABR when it comes on, then going WAH WAH WAAAAAH

It's a real neat sound with a fuzz-box AND a whammy pedal. Real cool.

Finally! Somebody who likes Yes! Most people haven't heard of them, but they are a truly incredible band in my opinion. This is one of my favorite songs by them. Also, do you ever listen to Traffic? They're excellent as well, and are pretty similar to Yes.

Also joining. I personally believe that the stuff then was real rock 'n roll while this stuff today is just knock-offs and stupid shit.

I agree with you that most of the stuff these days is almost unbearable to listen to, there are still some modern-day bands out there that are very enjoyable. Take the black keys. They're a great duet and sound similar to zeppelin and other blues-rock type bands. This is a really great song of there's. Also, I'll admit that I really like Beck. He's fantastic, and I like it how it's only him in the studio. To be able to play guitar, bass, drums, and vocals shows real musical talent. In fact, here's the instruments he can play, according to wikipedia...
Vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, harmonica, percussion, sitar, banjo, slide guitar, twelve-string guitar, glockenspiel, vocoder, kalimba, melodica. Now to be able to do all that, then compose it all together in the studio is real talent. So, not all modern day bands are awful, although I'll be the first to agree with you that a lot of them are. I'd rather cut my ears off then listen to any pop or rap music.

Pink Floyd FTW.

Naturally. They will always be #1 on my top favorite bands. From #2 down it's a different story, and is constantly changing, but they are an excellent experience to listen to. I definitely prefer them with syd barrett though. Have you ever listened to his solo work? Really trippy stuff. I love it.

Sorry if I'm shamelessly plugging myself into this thread, but I'd like to know what you fellows think of my singing voice. Good enough for a band, guys? Everyone tells me I'm horrible, but I still would really like to form one.

Please don't tear me a new one, guys. :'( I'm delicate like a flower.. Here goes.

www.soundclick.com/isuckatlife

Listen to any of these; The Lights, I Stay Away, Song To The Siren, Even Flow, Oceans, or Call Me A Dog acapella covers are all good. The others are just me fucking around with my voice to show a specific person for education purposes. Listen to them if you want to hear me at my (100% intentional) worst. lol
