When you got your game sponsored by Legitgames.com .I assume they paid via PayPal. Do you know if they would have any problem with sending a check through the mail for those who dont have paypal?

Just wanted to say thank you for making this thread. I've been hazy with the whole Sponsorship business and this thread answered a lot of my questions. I'll be emailing the sites you guys have recommended and I'll post any of my experiences here.

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask: Do sites not sponsor games with copyrighted content such as music? Also, if I've used music from the Newgrounds Audio Portal, do I need permission from the artists?

Depends on the sponsor, some will accept copyrighted material others wont, but if its not 100% unavoidable don't use copyrighted stuff.
And generally you don't need permission but I'm sure the artists love to know =P, and by putting up in the audio portal they are setting it up to be used in games and movies so I doubt you'd ever get a negative response

I'm cool now... Right guys?... Guys?

You don't need to get the permission from the artists on the audio portal for using their music in a flash that is only to be submitted to the flash portal. However, if you want it for commercial use, such as sponsorships I guess, you do need it.

I have a question!

Where do people think a good place to go would be to get sponsorship for the tut collab '07? It's not really a game, but it's popular, and the last one got sponsored.

The last one got sponsored by Flash Rage, right? I have seen Armor Games sponsor some tutorial by Jacksmack, and maybe some more more too. Jacksmack himself is from what I've heard sponsoring movies but I don't know if he is interested in tutorials as he makes them himself. Flash portal is another sponsor who's sponsoring both movies and games, they might be interested :)

I guess that it can't hurt to ask around, but these are the ones I can think of that might be interested.

I in fact had many problems with legitgames to the point where I don't know if I can reccomend them. No, they do not use anything but paypal but are legit in terms that they will pay you.

How much money does a typical game get? I received a reply from Armor Games and he's asking how much I want for the sponsorship, and honestly I have no idea...

A few hundred dollars for a decent game.. I advice you to start out pretty high, but with a hint that you might go lower ;) Getting bids from more sponsors also helps, don't give in too early.

Depends how big the game is. "Flight" had an offer of 1000, but It was too late (no, it isnt the current sponsor in there), And I know some games have gotten 2,000 or more, start high, and say your willing to accept less.

Exactly, start high. Sponsors are likely to bring the asking price down, they will probably offer you no more than what you asked for.
Once I get my game finished Im going to ask around different sponsors. Once I settle for one (if I get offered anything haha) I shall come back here and let you know how it went!

Well here's my experience with Dan at Armorgames. Ive gotten a few games sponsered as well as entered a few contests, so ill do each seperatly

ArmorGames Contests+++

It was a great experience, alot of competition, cool ideas for games. Aside for the Rockout Competition, the ArmorGames Contests 1 thru 5 were all judged fairly, great prize amounts given out, and lots of happy winners. You aren't always assured any money though, so thats why its a 3 outta 5. LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY THOUGH. Top prizes are HUGE, one time first place was 8000!!!

ArmorGames Sponsership +++++

Always great, always get a deserving amount of money dependant on how long u worked on it, what awards it recieved, how many views as well.

Dan McNeely, CEO:

Seriousness +++
Dan is very serious when it comes to giving money, he is proffesional to the point of making sure the money gets to you on times.

Efficiency +++++
Replies within a day or two, gives advice for improvement or a fair offer right away. Money got sent fast though, even if by check.

Social +++++
He is fun to talk to, down to earth guy. Proffesional in other ways but silly enough to converse with well.

OVERALL
Armorgames is a surefire way to go for sponsership plans/ contests.

=)

I've worked with ArmorGames.com a couple of times, and they offer really great money. New game gets 2k plus 2.5k for bonuses like score, popularity, etc. I'd reccomend ag for sure.

They seem to have a few different email addresses, when I contacted them a few months back on ArmorGames@gmail.com they replied within a day though so that is probably a safe bet :)

And yes, I definitely advice you to search for other sponsors, even after they have replied. Offers from other sponsors will probably raise your chances of a better offer from ag.

Movie sponsors are very rare, those I know of are:

Flashportal
JackSmack

Some sponsors who generally only sponsors games might be interested in movies if they are good, but then I mean really good, like something that can make it on to the top 50 :/

sweet thanx dreamworX but one more question
how would you go about negotiating without losing the deal and upsetting a future sponser?

The best way, in my opinion, is to let the other sponsors offers do the talking if you get what I mean. The sponsor understands that you of course wants the most out of it as possible and if he feel that it's worth it he will raise his offer if someone else bids higher, and if it comes to the point where he doesn't he will probably not feel offended that you don't take his offer and you will be able to contact him next time as well.

Always being polite is also very important, but don't be too polite, remember that you're in charge ;)

I am actualy kind of angry about your first post about maxgames.com,

You said you had copyrighted material in your game, which im assuming you didn't ask permission to use. Doesnt this mean getting any money from it is illegal and therefore is a very bad influence?

Also you said you were angry that he made you put his logos all over your game... Isnt that what you were being paid for? You people must understand that if you get a game sponsored the sponsor will need to make the money back, and that is a lot more difficult then it sounds, it takes months, even years to break even, so don't moan about the sponsor "screwing you" when really, their preventing themselves from being screwed.

It's a good idea for a thread though, just remember to take into consideration sponsors have a business to run, when you get a job in real life you'll always be doing more work then you're paid for, the same applys with sponsorship, dont be so greedy.

Also keep discussing illegal activities to a minimum :P

Currency

Grr... The US Dollar is always worth less, It used to be that a game sponsored for say 600 dollars, would be 400 Sterling, now its lower than 300. Non-American developers arnt benifiting...

Yes, I guess so. However, at the time I made that game I was not at all aware of the issues of copyright, now I make sure I have permission for everything I use and I encourage everybody else to do that as well :P

Also you said you were angry that he made you put his logos all over your game... Isnt that what you were being paid for? I think that you misunderstood me. I'm not angry at him for that, I certainly understand that sponsors needs to make a living as well. It was however a close call when I set my grade for him, and the fact that he wanted his logos to practically always be visible in the game while some other sponsors are satisfied with an intro and a a link in the menu he ended up on a 3 instead of a 4. Again, I understand that is best for him to have many logos in the game, but it's also best for him to pay as little as possible and I don't think that you had complained if I sad I wasn't satisfied with the payment.

It's a good idea for a thread though, just remember to take into consideration sponsors have a business to run, when you get a job in real life you'll always be doing more work then you're paid for, the same applys with sponsorship, dont be so greedy.

Thanks, as I said before I fully understand that sponsors also needs to make a living. But I don't really see what you mean by doing 'more work than you're paid for'? From what I've heard sponsors often earn lots more money on the traffic to the site generated by the game than the actual sponsorship was worth so in that case why shouldn't we be greedy? :P

Also keep discussing illegal activities to a minimum :P

Of course :P

Too bad you can't say that you must get more because "the currency rate is too bad'" ;)
