I'm currently negotiating sponsorship for my newest game, and it's at the point where I've got a few sponsors asking for a price, but no-one seems to want to quote a number.

I was wondering if anyone could advise, should I quote a fairly high value, risk putting some sponsors off, and letting the others haggle me down? Or should I quote fairly low, risk them all not competing and ultimately getting a lower price?

That is a tricky spot, it's usually really hard to get a concrete figure from sponsors. You do however have and advantage as you don't only have one interested sponsor.

I would say that you should make a realistic evaluation of what your game might be worth, and then give them a slightly lower figure. I think it's better to start not too high, if you start lower you have a better chance to get more of them "on the hook". After some auctioning you might very well get a sum from a sponsor that, if you had suggested it directly, would have made him pass on the deal.

I would rather make a risky high number, and if they don't accept go lower. That way, if they accept your first high offer you win :D. If not, there's no harm in saying, "I'm willing to go lower, I'm just not sure how much it's worth".

Yep. In real estate it's common knowledge to
'list the house 10% more than how much you actually want for it.'
Games are no different; it's all about negotiation. :]
If you appear as an approachable, kind, and professional artist
if they think the offer is too high they'll negotiate with you.

Like those old priceline commercials where they say
"It's not a deal...it's a negotiation."

"PRICE...LINE...NEGOTIAATOR."

Perhaps you're right, I'm a little bit rusty when it comes to negotiating sponsorships atm :)

I just realized that I've only had one game of mine sponsored in like the last 1,5 years.. I've entered quite a few contests, but that doesn't count xP

I am working on a game, the first flash that I've done in a long, long time. Looking at some of the figures people have quoted in here, I had absolutely no idea how lucrative flash was. I was thinking about sucking dicks for some extra money, but I guess I could make a few flash games instead.

I have a few more questions about sponshorship, but I think I'll try and read up on my own before I go asking in here.

Hey, Im about to send out a few emails to sponsors. Anyone have any advice on how to type up everything. Like how should I go about with the price of a game, should I include a ballpark in my first email? And should I just say that in any way? I dont want to come off as a dick to anyone haha.

Thanks in advance everyone,
-Matt
