a friend of mine said that blacks shouldnt have to pay as high of taxes since they were once slaves, that it levels the playing field. (he is black also)

well my ancestors faced a potato famin, where's my prize?

the minorities want equality with a bonus for events that they never faced. "my ancestors were slaves" well you were not a slave.

"well without affirmative action less minorities would get into college and university."
ok, that helps, but it shouldnt be based on race. a poor black student would be accepted over a rich white student, yet a rich black student would be accepted over a poor white student. they get judged by their race still, but its reversed. martin luther king jr. wanted to be judged by his character and not by his color.
yet equality still doesnt exist.
we dont owe the minorities anything except equality. no bonus. you want to be an equal, then your going to be treated like one. if you get a bonus then you are no longer an equil, you are a handicap. you cant have it both ways.

I agree with you entirely.
This is coming from a 'minority' group as well.
I have a problem with contradiction and hypocricy and this is just blatantly stupid. Giving any specific group of people advantages is bullshit unless of course there is a legitimate reason, but saying you were slaves 100+ years ago is just self-defeatist.

they were enslaved first, now they are babysitted. its like the government thinks that the minorities are not able to make it on their own. like they are lesser people. its the same song, only instead of chaining them they are babysitting them.
1700's:"they are not white, they need to be enslaved"
today: "they are not white, they need special treatment"

those who want the special treatment are saying they are lesser people. that they need help only because of their skin. not because they are under privileged but because they look different. "im black, they world is cruel" well you got money, a home, a job, there are some whites that would give up an arm to have that.

Why should one generation suffer for the mistakes and errors made by another? Its rediculous - we're all under the same umbrella, if you live in a country (USA,Canada,UK,Austrailia etc) you need to contribute to it.

Look, this topic has shown up time and again and the answer is always the same:

1. Yes, it is unfair to the currently living.

2. Yes, it is racist because it is preferential treatment.

3. Only help based on income level/being poor can actually be justified

4. Ethnic-promoters have a strong foothold in Congress; attempts to argue against racist preferential policies are supported by Whites (who lose out) and resisted by minorities (who gain from them).

5. At some point one of the minority members will call you a racist or a majority member will tell you that you will be called a racist if you argue against preferential policies.

The point of affirimitive action and such isn;t just to make up for past discrimination an mistreatment, it's to make up for discrimination that still exists today. If companies didn't have to hire minority workers, some wouldn't, because some owners/managers are racist, thus affirmitive action.

In Canada the fact that we give native people and quebecers preferential treatment only fuels more racism towrds them.

I'm Indian. I'm more of a minority than he is. So you can tell him that I said that he can get over it.

Ravariel, for some reason that made me laugh really hard. I highly doubt that Memorize is Native American, though.

Or maybe, just maybe, we can celebrate, openly talk about, and yes, even poke fun at, our differences as equals...maybe.
