The whole portrait looks a bit unbalanced; the eye line is tilted down to the right, he seems to have more cheeck on the right, has less lip and less beard. Combined with the big ear on that same side makes the piece lean to the right.
He's got pretty big ears, but yeah, I might have overdone it. You're right about it leaning to the right.
I think you could improve by using a wider value range; you've got nice dark blacks on his shirt, but on his face everything is very bland; it has very little shading which makes it look flat.
There aren't really any strong shadows in the reference pic too.
Lips (especially male lips) don't have strong outlines.
Yeah, lips bug me so bad. I can't draw them without making them seem feminine.
If you are using a reference (which I suggest you do); you could help yourself by making it black and white (if it isn't already) that way you can see values better.
