Even though they predicted eclipses that would happen hundreds of years from their time, and those eclipses happened when they said they would? I think they knew what they were talking about in that area.
I recently saw a thing on this on History channel, and it says why they said the world would end on that date. The Mayans predicted that on December 21, 2012, the earth would line up with the sun and the center of the galaxy. And astronomers have confirmed it. The astronomers say that when that happens, the magnetic poles will move, causing the Earth's crust to move too.
