I'm not sure what exactly defines a racist though. The most intuitive and obvious answer is: someone who commits to racism. So one act of racism wouldn't make you a racist. Multiple, sustained acts would, and it's very hard to imagine someone doing that without believing in it.

If you wanted to get technical yes pretty much. But in real life no ones gonna fucking care what it technically is, they're just gonna find it offensive and brand you as a racist. Well, saying that isn't racism either. You actually have to physically DO something. "All Jews have big noses" is a stereotypical belief. Having hateful thoughts towards Jews is just a more severe form of prejudice (because I'm classing general thoughts here as an 'attitude').

So yeah, you can have hateful thoughts about any race for no good reason but so long as you don't actually do anything about it you haven't engaged in racism.

There's a pretty big gap between the two words, because people tend to link stereotyping to more than just race (they tend to do this simply because 'stereotype' applies to a much broader spectrum of application).

For example, you can be stereotypical about blondes, Southerners, airplanes and Junior Mints. But you commit a racist act against these things. If you discriminated against the above mentioned things, you'd be commiting hairism, latitudism, aeroism and chocolategoodnessism.

Basically, you're right when you bring connotations in to the picture, in general. But when it comes to a touchy subject like racism, you can't just sling terms around. Someone reading your statement I quoted could be like, "oh, so since I don't like blondes that makes me a racist?"
