Firefox is really starting to piss me off. When sitting idle, it's using 50% of my CPU (PIII 550Mhz), and I don't know why. It did it before, but this last weekend has just been over the top crazy. I can't get a minute where it's not hogging my CPU.
There are a couple things different about this weekend, but I'm not sure if they're having an effect.
1. I downloaded firefox 2.0.0.4
2. I'm browsing a number of news sites that I normally don't to find articles for a Law assignment.
Now, if the news sites are running some funky JS, that could cause the problem I suppose, but I don't want to reload every tab with JS disabled to find out.
Got any ideas what might be happening? Have you had similar problems with the firefox 2.0.0.4?

You should delete cookies, and if you have had FF running for a while, try restarting FF or your computer to stop a lot of those things that are running in the back.

I know; FF is like this from the moment I boot it up. And I have deleted my cookies.
BTW, 50% is a minimum. It's been sitting at 70% recently.

Well, it's not using any CPU with just this open and running for a while... so it must be the funky JS then.

I was having a similar problem yesterday, my CPU was at an average of 70-80% and went up all the way to 100 a few times... and I believe it was firefox doing this. But once I rebooted, everything went back to normal.. however, hours later it happened again. I then rebooted again.
It hasn't happened since then, but I too am curious of the reason.

I thought of that too. I disabled all of them and restarted. It's still been like this since I did that though.

Maybe I'll try disabling JS then.

Ah, OK.
The next thing I would encourage you to do is try making a new profile: http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profil e
That usually fixes a lot of problems if they arise.

You can 'trim' the memory it uses when minimized from about:config.
Set config.trim_on_minimize to true. I hope that helped.

It's because 2.0.0.4 is a beta/updated version (not the latest stable release) and Firefox always hogs resources in less stable builds.

FF auto-updated itself and crapped up my installation... Now using BLAHIE6.

This is one reason why I won't use FF very often, it's slow and actually takes too long for it to load, even though I have 1 GB of RAM and a 2.8 GHz processor. It's up there on my list next to the ultimate pig aka Vista.

i know right? vista uses every available amount of RAM for its system idle process. HOW DARE THEY USE THAT!? seriously guys, no more of this fanboy/fangirl nonsense... :D

Version 2.0.0.4 is pissing me off. It has so many bugs in it, I can't believe they released it yet. I've seen it just refuse to install of several machines, and on others it just goofs up the installation.
It installs properly, after having to a manual install of course (ugh) but then it keeps asking you to update. If you click update, it doesn't do anything either.
I think they should have waited to release this one.

Well that was usefull, but my problem wasn't with memory.
Anyway, I got around to disabling JS, and that "fixed" the problem. There was still an abnormal CPU usage, but it was better than it was.

Gah, it's definitely not that bad being that my Firefox is using 455,184 kb of memory right now and I have like 8 tabs open.
I never actually realized how much memory it was using until I looked because it doesn't seem to slow down my computer at all.

How can you say it "only takes up 56,568 kb of memory"? That figure fluctuates, and you haven't even given any information about how it is running what that stat was taken.
And you also have to keep in mind that Firefox and IE are different. FF can be configured to use less memory, but it's not optimized that way by default. Read that link that was posted above about Firefox and memory.
