Do any of the other country's have pledges that they say to the flag at school.
like:
I pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all.
That would be the USA one.

I always thought that the pledge of allegiance was stupid...it irritated me how teachers would yell at students if they didn't do it.

here is canadian pledge
I pledge my loyalty to Canada,
And the freedom which it's democracy brings,
Provinces, territories and first peoples,
United equal and strong.
A country of rich colourful history and diversity,
Having many differences,
But one, unique, nation,
Upholding the rights and responsibilities,
Of all its people.

They can't "make" you. You don't have to. It actually had to go to the Supreme Court (can't remember which circuit) but freedom of expression includes freedom to shut up when you damn well please.

The pledge shows our respect to the flag and to our country.

It seems only new countries do those pledges things, they always seemed a bit silly to me, kind of like worshiping a giant gold cow.
So no, you'd be hard pressed to find any countries that do a pledge of 'allegience' anywhere in western Europe.

You don't have to pledge in our school, but you have to stand.

i think they make you stand up, you usually dont "have" to recote the pledge, but all your teachers will hate you. and also i thought hat supreme court bill was just to allow people to omit the words "under god" if they pleased.
it doesnt seem to make sense to have the supreme court uphold your rights if you wont even respect your country by reciting the pledge.

So if you refuse - what? They physically force you to stand up with your hand gestured in however the hell you gesture towards the flag? That seems very oppressive.
Also I'm pretty sure international human rights are more powerful than American law.

Hey I'm just saying what I'm hearing. The other guy said the 'supreme court' only lets you omit the world 'with god' or something.
How does it really work then?

What I've never understood is that if it's a pledge, then why do schoolchildren have to repeat it every single day? It's a pledge! Shouldn't you only have to say it once? Is the government so insecure and mistrustful of us that they want us to reaffirm our support for America every single day?
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Well it's just that if you don't, you'll probably be the only not reciting it, and nobody wants to feel left out =(

Lawl, the supreme court isn't gonna care wether or not some middle school kids are saying the pledge. I didn't stand or say the pledge all throughout highschool.
What can a thoughtful man hope for mankind on Earth, given the experience of the past million years? Nothing

No one has to say the pledge if they don't want to, but it's considered polite to stand even if you're not saying it.

They threw Animal Farm, 1984, A Brave New World and Lord of the Flies at me. Quite a reading list that year.
They also threw Civics, Social Studies and History books at me. Well, might as well use them for something if you aren't going to read them.
Also, they called me a Nazi and a communist. This is especially funny considering the two governmental societies are completely incompatible (and that whole WWII western front thing) in addiction to the jingoistic nationalism that defined the core of the Nazis.

I used to be the only kid in class who didn't pray in Primary school, except the Buddhist. She was always stealing my thunder >:-(
You don't feel left out, you feel unique. Like you have that drip more of individuality then the drooling masses that chant away without really meaning a word.

I actually never do it and just sit down, but when I wasn't allowed too (last year) I just sang a fucked up German version of it to piss people off, and then I said "fuck America!" thats one of the main reasons I got expelled

I didn't even know Canada had one. I remember in grades 3-6 we had to Salute the flag with:
I salute the flag
The emblem of our country
To her I give my love and loyalty.
We had to do it at assemblies after we sang Oh Canada
Fucking elementary school teachers making students sing.

The point is that if you hear it enough times, you actually start to believe it and become a good, well-behaved little worker bee for whichever government is in power.
The amazing thing is, some people actually do this.
Give my thoughts form and make them look insightful.

Poor, unlucky son-of-a-bitch. I imagine that within the next 24 hours, a brigade of mounties will come charging through your door and beat your ass to death. I'll miss you.
