i agree. i am proud of what it stands for, but when i, or anyone else, look at it, all they see is just what's going wrong or something negative. but there are also times when i am proud to be an american. so just like you said, it all depends on what is being viewed, and how it is being viewed. but yes, i am proud.
But if I was to leave the country, I would not say I was Canadian, and I would not spell "color" any differently. So I'm definitely not ashamed of it. If people are going to judge because of our douchebag government, fuck them.
i couldnt have said it better myself.

Then GTFO, maybe?
Yay, Obama won. Let's thank his supporters:
-The compliant mainstream media for their pro-Obama propaganda.
-Black Panthers for their intimidation of voters.

How does our society reflect onto others?
I noticed you got this out of a european paper ( or whatever), Europeans tend to think they are above the rest of the world ( I should know, my company deals with europe and they are extermley stuck up) so, who gives a shit.

I find it odd that those who are not proud to be Americans because "you don't choose what country you're born in" are in fact proud of their heritage/ethnicity and wear it like a badge of honor, even though you don't really choose that either... you know, "I'm a proud black man, but I am not proud to be American!"
I smell hypocritical bullshit.

I'm proud of what America stands for in most cases, but I'm not proud of some of America's decisions. I means, America is generally a standard of freedom and despite how much I hate the biased news I wouldn't keep them from broadcasting it because they have the right too.
In all the countries I've been too outside of America I've never met innate hostility. In Mexico they treated me nicely, if not a bit stereotypical at some points. The only real issue is that America is presented as a stereotype in alot of countries and Americans are classified as either rich or arrogant. Sometimes it could even be both.
Overall, I'm proud of what America stands for and I think that other countries may have gotten stuck with the American stereotype than the American reality.

Oh for fuck sake. There are fucking hundreds of "who did more in the war" threads. Germany, ok? They fought the world and almost won, it took Russia, America, Britain (and our minions) and France to stop them.

You do forget that America was build after the death of millions of Native Americans.
Not to mention all the wars that were located in America soon thereafter.
To post or not to post, that's the question.

Why do you assume I forget that? That was our nation's history, not my history. Yes, I live in a land where the Native Americans were horribly abused. It's a great stain on the USA's history. Do you hate your neighboring German friends for the terrible things the Nazis did during World War II? If you have any brains, you wouldn't; what their country did (or anyway, what those ruling their country did) is not a reflection of who they are as a person.
If people are going to judge me for being American, fuck them. And if you are going to, then fuck you. I do not identify myself by being American, I'm human. That's all.

America achieved good for its own citizens (in the past more so than now), but for the rest of the world it has brought bad and good in pretty much equal measure. It created Saddam Hussien as a dictator, overthrew the democratically elected government in Iran and did some sick shit to innocent people in Veitnam and managed to get tonnes of them killed in Iraq to further American interests. I'd list the good things, but somehow I have a feeling thats not where the argument is gonna lie.

I don't think we've brought good and bad in equal measure, not at all. The good includes ending WWII, rebuilding Europe and Japan after WWII, staring down the Soviets, and what have you.
The bad things may be more numerous, but the quantity is not what's the most important. The quality of the good outweighs the quantity of the bad.

I'm not just talking about the British I mean there are many other cultures and countries that have achived more. The Romans went down 1500 years ago yet their military tactics, technology, basic society and architecture made a humongous impact on the world which can still be seen today.

It's very true. I've noticed that those that say things like "LOL USA #1!" without recognizing other cultures' importances end up just making other people unwilling to acknowledge what a significant country the USA currently is. Of course, it's not the most significant one of all time, but the fact that Prague is planning (or is having) an anti-US march is one testament to its significance, though it be negative.

Grrrrr. You stupid stupid people.
Of course America hasn't contributed more to the world than any other culture ever. That'd be stupid. But we've done a helluva lot, and I'm damn proud of it.
If it weren't for the U.S., you'd all be speaking German (uh...twice) and I'd have never been born.
