American-English Test. 2007-05-22 15:16:50 Reply

Alrighty-ho then-erm...this is just a little niggling question I had in the back of my head in thread form.

Basically we all know that the Americans have different words for some English words.
Now As far as I can see most British people know the translations (mostly from American TV shows and the like...)
BUT (zomg ) do The americans know these translations
Below is a list of AMERICAN ONLY words-Listen up Yanks!-your challenge is this-translate as many of these as you can into good pl' fashioned English

(BTW-just to test you-maybe one or two trick questions)

FELLOW BRITONS-Dont tell them the awnsers OK?-I really want to see what these Yanks do and do not know

Cookie
Jelly
Drapes
Apartement
Gas(as in what you put into a car)
Yarn
Tic-Tac-Toe
Popsticle
Ass
French-fries
Soda
Checkers(board game)
Band-Aid
Diaper
pacifier
elevator
eraser
Trunk(as in car)
trash can
sidewalk

I could go on...but thats enough-no cheating now!

Gas or gasoline (formerly gasolene) was a word for the fuel before the word petrol came about to describe basically the same thing.

Ow, your bright god-like admin font hurts my eyes.

I'm confused. Am I right or wrong about the British calling it petroleum
My guess comes from the local gas station called the "BP" which means British Petroleum.

In the US jelly and jam aren't the same. Jam usually refers to fruit preserves that still have evidence of the fruit in them (seeds, bit of fruits, etc). Jelly is more of a gelitin fruit flavored spread where you don't see evidence of the fruit in it. Like grape jelly or strawberry jelly would just be a clear purple or clear strawberry spread. Strawberry jam or strawberry preserves would have seeds in it and pieces of the fruit.

We don't call all these different products jelly, we call them by what they are, jelly, jam, preserves, etc.

If we made sandwhiches with peanut butter and jam, we'd call them peanut butter and jam sandwhiches too. The fact is we have a different product called jelly that isn't different than jam and it is more commonly used. It isn't as good as jam, but sadly a lot of Americans go for the cheap mass produced products over a higher quality product. Not me though, I buy some Strawberry jam from Switzerland that's pretty good, and it's available at most grocery stores.
