There's a lot of controversy as to what satanism is exactly. Some say its the worship of evil, others say its the indulgence of ones self. I'm interested to hear about what other people have to say about it. Myself, I haven't really formed an opinion on the subject. I haven't really heard anything about it.

From what I've heard, Satanism is where you indulge during life and get punished in the afterlife.

sorry for the triple post, just gotta fix what i said. Satanism is where you indulge during life and then, supposedly, because you've indulged and been part of satanism, you get sent to hell.

I've done alot of research on Satanism and this is what I found/know. (Also I've been one for 4 years)
Their are actually a few types of Satanism.
1. Symbolic Satanism
Anton Szander LeVay's Satanism which has the Church Of Satan and was founded durring the 1960s. LeVay wrote many Satanic texts, rituals, spells, and etc. Along with the Satanic bible. In LeVay Satanism or better known as Symbolic Satanism one sees him or herself as a god. They judge poeple on their actions and not who they are. They follow a strit yet surprisingly peaceful life. The main thing in this is to be the best person you can possibly be without harming others. Yet some of its rules are such: When one harms you harm them. So it does have what some would call it's "darker side" however Satan in Symbolic Satanism is nothing more then a symbol.
2. Stereotypical Satanism
This is the one created by the christians. It is basically all the stereotypes or to be put more respectful towards christians based on their beliefs. It's the whole eat babies, drink blood, thing. However it only exists as a stereotype or image of most christian and ignorate poeple who care not to study satanism.
3. Tradational Satanism aka Spritual Satanism.
Very simular to other pagan religions. This one focuses on worshiping many gods, meditiations, and self-indulgement. It's very spiritual and some things others would say are "far-fetched" so one needs alot of faith in this. Satan in this form of Satanism does actually exist. He is one of the 4 main gods (the 4 crowned princess of hell) Astoroth, Azaral, Beelzebub. (I may have spelt that wrong and yes I know their popularly believed to be forms of Satan himself they are considered different gods in this). Also in Spiritual Satanism one has a gaurdian god, performs rituals to summom gods in Astral form to speak with them,(usually to ask questions).
Notes:
Overall Symbolic And Spiritual Satanism are very peaceful. Sadly they are looked down in society. I've had christian youth group throw rocks at me along with athiest harrasse me alot over the years.
Both Symbolic and Spiritual are rogonized by thr US Army as an actual religion.
The christian form is only well-known but is not real. Some say/think they practice it but are only being idiotic.
The Satanic Star represents the elements. Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Spirit being the strongest and largest point on the star.
Many god in Spiritual have animal symbols along with cards, plants, and stars. Example: Satan = peacock, goat, and snake.
In Symbolic Satanism the number of symbols is huge. So many things represents other things. Example: The Star represents Satan who himself is a symbol in it but also represents power.
Personal opinion:
I find the stereotypical Satanism insulting and disgusting. Though I know chrisitians will not stop protraying this form of Satanism anytime soon in books, speeches, movies, etc.
Symbolic Satanism seems more of an "ego-religion" to me. I've met a few IRL and they all have rather large ego but still are very nice poeple.
I've been a spiritual satanism for 4 years and through the meditations and faith my life has become much happier.

Anymore questions about forms of Satanism I will glady try my best to answer to my fullest potential.

Thank you for that very in-depth description. I had the vague idea that there were certain sects of satanism but I didn't know what they were like. Thanks a lot. Does anyone else have an opinion?

I'm not trying to annoy anyone, infact i find this thread incredibly annoying. Satanists are like stupid RPG dice rolling kids that distract themselves from reality because they're afraid to face themselves and their own lives. Now that's sad.

I've heard from "satanists" that real satanism is merely atheism with a purpose to indulge in ones carnal beliefs.
They dont actually believe in the devil or god, but they are against christianity and restraint. If you want to eat cakes, eat five every day. If you want to have sex, have it with three different women every day. Take life to the ultimate extreme.
Faith tramples all reason, logic, and common sense.
PM me for a sig.

What's sad is you actually responded to my responce.
1. RPG dice games like D&D are very fun when played right. However I admit that their are some with issues while playing.
2. I am not afriad or myself nor reality. What I myself am doing by being Satanism is expanding reality itself. And enlightening myself.
3. I'm curious what do you have to gain from argueing with me right now? Are you doing it for kicks? Bragging rights? Or does it exict you?
A person simply wishes to know some information on satanism so I give it. Yet you for an unknown reason decided to come and state a useless opinion.
If the opinion was educated or at least "I find it idiotic due to... (insert reason here)" I would have some amount of respect. Yet you just said it was dumb like some child.

Witchcraft, devil worship, purposeful sin in direct defiance of God (and yes, Satanists do believe in God), all that fun stuff.

In Witchcraft or better put Wicca the "devil" or Satan don't exist.
Also in many religions the Devil and Satan are two different beings. (Shocked me too.)
And yes. You are right. In Symbolic God is a symbol... (like most things lol)\
And in Spiritual God exist but ironicly is the only "evil god" their is.

You're an inexperienced little shit if you believe that.
Any person who believes that the supernatural doesn't exist is an idiot, because there's direct proof of it.

That is actually one of the best ways to discribe what we (Symbolic Satanists) beileve. The indulgence comes from our disdane for religons such as christianity. (Which we are agianst for a lot of the crimes it has commited agianst people, such as the cursades and demonsizing other religions.) Christianity dictates that one must deny themselves things they want in order to achive enlightenment. Because we believe that there is no enlightenment and that death is the end. Then we see no reason to not indulge, and enjoy the pleasures of life.
We are like, said before, very peaceful people until you piss us off. One of tyhe things Lavey says in the Satanic bible is that if you strike me on my cheek, I will smash you one yours. But other then that we are quite peaceful.
If you are interested, go ahead and talk to some of the preists, though some of the people that I've talked to still try and keep themselves hush hush. Also you could go to nearly any book store and pick up the Satanic bible, or any of the books such as The Devil's Notebook, and Satan Speaks! All of which are rather cheap.
We do recive a lot of unwanted attention though, due to sterotyping from others. I hve woken up one day while sleeping at my father's house with a preist standing above me sprinkling me with holy water.
I'm not sure what else I can say that hasn't already been said on here, but I am will to answer any other questions someone might have.

Why do you feel the need to belong to an organization, or call yourself a "satanist?" Is it to justify your own existence? If you don't believe in god, why not call yourself an atheist and go off and live your life? Do you believe that it's necessary to follow a manual, and if so why? Do you practice rituals? Do you do drugs? If you seek ultimate enjoyment of life, given that life is essentially meaningless anyway, are there times when you will compromise this and grind it out working class style?

I feel no need to belong to an organized religion. I just feel that it best describes my belief system.
Is it to justify your own existence?
No, I have no need to justify my existance.
If you don't believe in god, why not call yourself an atheist and go off and live your life?
That is a very hard question to answer. I was an atheiest for quite a while before I became a Satanist. When I cracked the book and took a look into the ideas, I got a different view on life that I like a lot better, that atheism just didn't have a feel for. I'll try and discribe it better when my mind comes to it.
Do you believe that it's necessary to follow a manual, and if so why?
Not at all. I don't follow the Satanic Bible by the letter, nor does any other Satanist. I don't feel that it is important to follow a book because each man should decide how he wants to live his life, which Satanism promotes.
Do you practice rituals?
No, becuase mainly becuase they do no good. Lavey even said this in one of his writings that the rituals are only to help you get your emotions under control, and help give the practicioner peice of mind. Such as a destruction ritual is for harming your enemies. The person performs the ritual and then forget about it. It helps the person feel that they have caused folly to thier enemy. And whether they have or not doesn't matte becuae they feel that they have. So it no longer weighs on their mind. I find this to be weak in the person, and Satanism teaches that people need to be strong.
Do you do drugs?
Would you mind explaining the relevance of this question?
If you seek ultimate enjoyment of life, given that life is essentially meaningless anyway, are there times when you will compromise this and grind it out working class style?
Oh of course, I don't go out and sleep with three women everday. I don't eat five cakes jsut because I want cake. Its more the concept of no self-denial. Now yes there are some satanists that do follow this doctrine, but they are few becasue common sense says that bad things will happen if you do do stuipd things like that. And stupidity is one of out Cardnial sins.
Hopefully that helps to answer your questions.

Also, you seem rational, but calling ones' self a "satanist" just seems silly to me. However, it's a shame that america isn't a nation of satanists, but is instead a nation of christians.

not the first time thats happened. unfortunatley there is no, for the lack of a better term, "scientifically" acceptable definition of what supernatural is, what it consists of and what can legitametly be described as supernatural.

I know many wiccans and have read quite a few of their books and they prove about as much as any other theistic bible or book.
