It's really only widespread because it's followers are generally the decedents of people who were to weak minded to have the gall to speak their own opinion. Actually, there's little evidence to suggest jesus ever even existed. That tomb they found? Many people were named jesus in those days. Ever heard of appelonius?(spelled that wrong i'm sure) look him up.
