This is only a theory.

Suppose you had lost the will to live, so you decide to end your life. You purchase a gun, find the most comfortable place to sit down and pull the trigger. But to your dismay, instead of experiencing whatever existence you believe to have after death, you find yourself in terrible agony, bleeding profusely from the wound in your head. Police and medical teams arrive on the scene in a matter of minutes, you are taken to the hospital where you learn you will live to see another day. Now in a psychiatric ward, you ponder to yourself how you managed to live. Surely a shot through the temple would kill you. By some miracle, you have survived what would have ended the lives of 99.99% of others that put themselves in the same scenario.

How could this have happened?

The fact is, you ARE dead. Just not from your point of view.

If you consider that every day you are presented with choices that would ultimately change the course of your life, and that each choice branches off into an alternate universe. For example, you go to the humane society to get a pet, do you buy a dog or a cat? You believe you bought the cat however there is another version of the universe in which you bought the dog, you are just unable to experience it because of the decision you had made. Every decision you make provides an alternate "lifeline" in which you experience the universe. Free will would suggest that there are an infinite number of choices you could make, hence there would be an infinite number of universes.

Now, what are the chances that you survive a shotgun blast to the head? 1 in 10000000000000000? Even less than that? Chance is made completely irrelevant because there is an infinite number of chances that will survive. You could say that you died 4968460560937 times before you experienced the one time you somehow managed to survive.

With death, your consciousness would cease to exist in one universe and would be transferred to the one which you had survived. The people in the previous universe would perceive you to be dead, but because of your consciousness, you are only able to experience surviving the incident and life afterwards.

You are immortal, at least from your point of view.

Immortality sounds good. But consider the horrible disfigurement and agony you are now in because you managed to survive with 1/4 of your head missing. Now suppose you get into a car accident and are terribly maimed, you may die in a number of universes but ultimately you experience survival, and you keep on living, now without your right arm. Eventually you are going to get old and die a peaceful death from natural causes right? You will, but you won't get to experience it. Old age normally would be the end of you, but that heart attack or stroke that killed you 549847347 times before, didn't this time. You will live forever, becoming more and more mutilated, and because of the infinite number of branches that can be created, one leading to your survival, you will never die.

Unfortunately, if any of this is true, we are assured to suffer for eternity.

anyway, im not 100% sure, but i think the correct term you're looking for is alternate dimension, as apposed to alternate universe. An alternate universe is just another place far, far away that had a different bang than our big bang (if such a place exists since the universe may just repeat itself infinantly) where as another dimension is an alternate reality to ours. but like i said, im not completely sure.

Yes, but the main point of the theory is it's downfall. The infinite universes. If you have the proof for these it could be true, but since there is none, I refuse to believe it.

But if you instantly transfer to another universe, you'd have all the same attributes as that universe had and caused before you exist there. So when you blow your head off with a shotgun in one universe, you could either go to one where you survive, or one where you decide not to pull the trigger.

In that way, I see a flaw in your ideas. There's no guarentee you'd get the shitty outcome every time.

First of all, even if there was an alternative universe, why would our choices and actions interfere with our other dimensions? I can't even grasp the logic of alternate universes of ones self having multiples of each other. Sounds just like another one of those self-centered theories that makes human existance seem less simple and unimportant, like the geocentric theory.

Okay, so if free will was at work, then again, our alternate selves wouldn't affect our decision making and/or experiences. Even if they did, what is stopping us from experiencing it again? Unless there is some magical "link" or something towards ourselves and our billions of alternative selves, anyone can experience whatever the fuck they want regardless of what your former self experienced.

Again, there's a gap of information that leads to how we are all connected. Also, if we are in billions of dimensions or whatever all at once, our minds couldn't handle all of the choice making, therefore if your mind WAS connected to already experienced events, then are you choosing to re experience?

I keep confusing myself with this thought, but, imagine that someone had survived incidents such as shotgun blasts. Other people would have begun to notice extremely bazaar things such as this throughout time since the existence of human. People would have witnessed, and recorded, and since there are plenty of alternative dimensions to ourselves, it would be common to life to witness these things. It's not about yourself experiencing eternal agony and not knowing about it, society would have learned by now if it was actually true.

hmmm... interesting theory. I have to disagree with it, as

1. if it were true, there would be people in our experiential lives who are ancient and horribly disfigured. I haven't seen many thousand year-old cripples. not living anyway.

2. the possibility of multiple universes does not imply that every single action will result in a statistical number of correlary iniverses being created. that would mean that every single event and molecule in the history of time would have spawned an entire universe of possibilities unique from every other. While I cannot disprove the theory, I can't think of any actual observable phenomena that could support it.

3. God, that would be terribly depressing. who the hell would want to live life after life for all eternity, always growing weaker and more crippled. My thirdc ground for disagreeing is simply that i find the notion repulsive.
