well, for one, it's against the rules to talk about them. period.
Discussing illegal activities - including, but not limited to: ROMs, cracks, warez and hacking.
but some of you don't seem to understand that.
yeah, they're illegal, but not if you delete them after 24 hours or if you own the game itself.
you're fucking wrong faggots. one, that "24 hour" rule is bullshit. remember when that shit was said about mp3's? explain that to the RIAA while they are fucking you in the ass. and two, if you own the game, why do you need a ROM of it? you already fucking have it.
so seriously, shut the fuck up about ROMs and the legality of them. because you're fucking wrong. if you want to talk about ROMs and have questions about them, go to a fucking ROM site.

HAI! WHERE CANS I GETZ POKEMANS DIAMOND ANS PARALS?1!!!
Seriously, it's really bad when you have to restate rules that are already posted. It's like Parody topics, they don't know when to quit.

So you can use save states since you suck too much to beat it normally.

Isn't ok to download them from certain companies if you actually own the game?

because with a rom it is easier to use gameshark codes, do 'speedruns', record yourself playing etc.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But I guess not talking about them at all is a safer route.

for backup purposes only. not to play them on your pc. Nintendo once said that there is no reason to backup your games.

Yeah, I remember reading that too. I really don't see a reason to. Everyone knows if you're using them you're just using them to be cheap and play a console game for free.

While I agree with what you are saying for the most part, not all ROMS are illegal. There are plenty of homemade roms out there that are fine to download. Also, some have become public domain (such as Beyond Zero Tolerance).
That being said, I do agree that discussion about them do not belong here. One less thing this board needs.

agreed. homebrews are 100% legal and i would have no problem with people talking about them, as long as there is proof that it's a homebrew and topic doesn't stray off that subject. but seriously, when people talk about ROMs, they are not talking about homebrews.

Yup. I even made a ROM topic when I first started posting here. I think a mod locked it with a "YAAARRRR" or something like that.
But yeah, after looking into the legality of such things after that, I've realized that its probably too complex to bother discussing here. Especially when the intent of the user is often completely unknown.

Yeah, I know. I am just saying that the option is there. And as you know (and state), 99% of the time, they are talking about an illegal rom. Oh well. Just whip out the ban plank on them.

There really is no such thing as "ownership" of a game. Ownership would entail that you have the right to do as you please with your product; eg: loan it out, copy it, resell it, etc. When you purchase a game, you only own the rights to use your copy of their media as they deem fit for your use, and your right can be revoked at any time.

Ron seems to be in a pissy mood tonight.
The only reason people use roms is because you can't buy most of the games anymore unless you want to bid X amount of money for it on ebay. For the newer roms though should be bought instead. imo

You own the copy of the game, not the game itself. This is obvious. That's why I can't sell bootleg copies of The Machinist (even though I could make a killing at this university).

Does this mean that the stoner crew is eligible for deletion? I really agree with you on ROMs, if you take good care of your cartridge, CD, etc. then there should be no problem.
My brother makes backups of his CDs, I don't see why, if he didn;t leave them lying on the floor, they would work fine.

well there are other reasons for recording speedrun's on the computer and using game genie's and ripping sprites and music. also if the game dousn't work or you sold the console or if you just can't find the game.

Well, I'm going to assume that this thread goes double for emulators. Though the emulator, for the most part is freeware, just the purpose of it is illegal. Actually think it is a good thing to clear all this up, and I might book mark it for future references.
Although, roms have been around for years now, and people are still talking about it like it is a new thing or it is surprising. In any event people, this is nothing to get your panties in a bunch about. Been in the rules and he's just restating it.

no. you don't have the right to download a copy of the game. if you were to back it up yourself, by hooking it up directly to your computer and ripping it, then it would be legal.
