Do you think that somepeople in the media abuse there right to freedom of the press? Some of them will do anything for a story. When someone famous gets married or his going to have a child the media is all over it, do they pay that much etenchen to someone who isn't famous, no. Some will get heavily involved in there personal lives even if that person doesn't want them to be involved. I'm not saying that there right should be taken away, I'm just saying some of them abuse it.

I think most people in the media look down on paparazzi and tabloids. Sure, following the excruciating details of a person's personal life is somewhat pathetic, but it sells magazines.

Absolutely...
But I don't blame the media, I blame the mindless masses of dipshits who would rather see a clip of a celebrity without their makeup on than see what is actually happening in the world. Seriously... the media no longer educates and informs because the consumers don't want that. Now the media just entertains and occupies the time of people who would rather focus their attention on the failures and successes of celebrities than actually learn about something relevant to the world.
Modern mass media is the one biggest negative thing that the US has created and exported to the rest of the world. I remember reading that a few years ago, more Canadians tuned in to watch "American Idol" than they did to watch the coverage of their own national elections. And recently I read that more Europeans watched the show "24" than the coverage of the EU constitution vote.
This is going to be the downfall of western society, people are turning into dumb, mindless little drones who ignore important things in the world and focus on meaningless, insignificant and FAKE entertainment engineered specifically to catch their attention.
Yay, Obama won. Let's thank his supporters:
-The compliant mainstream media for their pro-Obama propaganda.
-Black Panthers for their intimidation of voters.

I think some news mediums still have credibility, like NPR or the newspaper. But I agree that the general trend is downward. It's not fair to blame genuine entertainment for a lack of interest in politics, though. More Canadians may be watching American Idol than their national elections, but the two programs aren't mutually exclusive. The problem lies more with a general disinterest in politics.

I think the problem has more to do with ignorance about what politicians do, than just disinterest. Most people don't even understand how the economy works or even the legislative process. For that, media takes partial responsibility, but our education system doesn't even bother teaching the important aspects of the government, like how they set trade policy, or subsidize big business etc.

Yeah, i'm fed up with seeing dumb, insignificant news splashed over the front covers of newspapers or magazines, such as when Anna Nicole Smiths death, surely there was more important stuff that day, and any political news or any news of significance is indignantly squeezed somewhere in the middle of the newspaper.
Cellardoor6 provided some examples such as 24 or American Idol being watched more than any important programs, the only programs i can think of in the UK is stupid reality shows like Big Brother, I'm a "celebrity" or Pop Idol etc, i'll bet any of them have in some way coincided with any important and relevant news coverages etc with the reality shows having to be changed to another time slot so the nation can watch thier stupid shows. It makes me sick.

IF there is any reality to some of those shows.... it sure is Fu*$#*G twisted.
Also just look at how the Anna Nicole Smith death was played out on the news.
They broadcast that like it was important to everyone, it was important for the real father & whoever might get their hands on all the money. But I couldn't give a rats ass one way or the other.
Spin doctoring, guessing, making shit up it is stupid T.V. for stupid people.
They brodcast that story like it somehow really mattered, almost like for example--the Russians & the Americans had become partners in peace for the world. Now that would be a story that would truely effect our lives.
Most of what is on T.V. isn't worth the time required to watch it.

If you want to be famous, you have to give up anonymity. Too bad.

When the BBC use their news headlines (both on Ceefax and on their actual news programming) to plug a report on that night's Panorama, you know they're abusing their positions for the sake of ratings - managing to top the tasteless irrresponsibility of news programmes having ratings wars.
Celebrities, on the other hand, should get a grip: they crave the attention of the media to build and maintain their careers, yet whinge about it if they can't hack it. Sorry, it goes with the so-called job: more money and fame, but a higher level of intrusion in your life because of both.
