....my shit sucks. I want to learn how to make something like this. every time i try to make just a simple 4-walls room, i can't get it right. you did a good job with that. it looks like someone just took a picture of a room. :)

nice work Tetigi!

DooDooMeaT: My understanding of Maya is pretty basic. The extent of my animation so far has only been turntables and keyframeing a camera. On my last model I did my first character rigging, but the book I was following stopped short after finishing the setup and didn't give any instructions on how to actually use the rig (the rig wasn't very efficient and was overly complicated). I definitely want to animate this guy, and now that I am actually doing something with a context I'll probably go through all the way with it.

quick note before starting off - you can check out that previous 3D model of mine over at CGSociety at - link

Anyhow, I decided not to put any more work into that last one cause there's been too much time with it and I need to do something new. So anyhow, here's something that I've been working on recently in Max. It's going to be a huge improvement hopefully on the previous one too. Going to try a few new things with it.

But yeah, just a note with Z-brush everyone. It's a good tool to play around in and get all 3D artsy with, but if you plan to get into animation with it - you'll want to model your work in another application like Maya or Max, and then bring your work into Zbrush later for extra detail - because otherwise your model's topology will be all shot - and that will mean really bad deformation when animating. So try and learn some of the more technical sides of modeling if you're interested in getting somewhere in 3D.

Anyhow - here's some renders and wireframes of front and side topology.

That's a pretty sweet model you got there, Zandoid! I'm not nearly that advanced yet, but I'm workin' on it. Anyways, this is a sword that I modeled. I've been wanting to make a sword, so... I did. :D

Sword spinning slow (not the final model)

Sword spinning fast (almost the final model)

Cool! Looking forward to it. I'm intending to head into the games industry after school so I started dabbling in the 3D arts though I can't say I've gotten very far so far. I hope, for your sakes and ours, those games have good storylines.

depends on the program, what you're trying to do, and how graphics-intensive you want to go.

in 3dsMAX, offhand, i can remember there was a turboSmooth or meshSmooth option... there was also an option about recalculating the smoothing groups or something... i forget.

there should be similar options in most programs.

mentalRay also had some sort of 'bevel edges' option thing going... but that's different.

bah! i need to get back into 3d!!! but the computers we use at school are locked up for the summer T.T

my art.,any requests?Art tech support!
pm me if i should start a webcomic. 10+ people think so!

In Lightwave, you can turn on 'Smoothing' in the Texture Editor. That's all I can say...
