Take a look at this proposal.

Im tempted to take up smoking, just so I can get paid to quit.

As smokers themselves keep saying, smoking is a choice, so why should the non-smoking majority be forced to pick up the tab while the smokers are off getting counselling?

Some amount of bullshit these days.

That is a pretty stupid proposal. I hardly see reason how this is going to improve work or production in a work place.

it's just another excuse for people to skive off from their work, whilst still getting paid, and as that bloke says it is up to the individual to stop smoking.

Ehh, they still have to attend clinics and shit to get paid.

If the business thinks it will increase productivity enough to offset the costs, they can go ahead and do whatever the hell they want.

And? Thats not what they were hired to do. The company hired them to do a certain task, and if theyre away getting help to quit smoking, then they are not performing that task. Why should they get paid for it.

If the business thinks it will increase productivity enough to offset the costs, they can go ahead and do whatever the hell they want.

Thats the thing, none of them do. Its all being recommended by an external group.

That's bullshit.

If anything, workers should get penalties for smoking. The compenies should not have to pay for someone else's addiction.

I also don't see why you should be forced to stop smoking by your buisness if it does not effect your job. You're habbits should not be a concern in the workplace. If for some reason they become one, that's when you should be made to quit, but not otherwise.

Can someone please explain to me how paying people to not smoke is going to be productive to the compony? Because I seem to be missing this piece of information.

Well fuck the external group. They can bring up the idea, but they shouldn't force companies to do it (not that they'll ever be able to).

It still seems like one hell of a deal.

If the business thinks it will increase productivity enough to offset the costs, they can go ahead and do whatever the hell they want.

That's the problem, from the wording of the article, it seems like a mandatory thing. It should be up to the businesses to implement these policies.

Even if your half tempted to get into for the money, don't do it. If you do it only for the money then you will addiction problems for the rest of your life! My father quit smoking when I was little but picked it up again because of the addiction he had when he was a teen. I started up smoking but if I was a non-smoking, no amount of money would ever make want to start now that I look back. Unless it was a couple million, then I would start.

What if they offered money to stop smoking pot or stop taking crystal meth? Would start those drugs just for the money? If you do and get the money, you will have one hell of a time trying not to do it anymore.

Obesity doesn't affect other people though. Theres no such thing as secondhand obesity (except if you count fat babies).

Smoking is such a big deal because it affects non-smokers almost as much as it does the people who actually smoke. I quit smoking a few months ago, and now I realize how annoying secondhand smoke is, and how bad smokers smell. I used to get pissed off about the anti-smoking hysteria but now it makes sense because it's kind of lame that people who don't smoke are still exposed to it.

The government doesn't have to regulate everything. There doesn't have to be a law for everything that mildly bothers some people. People should have the courtesy not to smoke in other people's faces, there doesn't have to be a law about it. We're not going to ban chewing gum because a few rude people stick it everywhere you're going to put your hands. I agree, however, that steps should be taken to make sure that people who cannot do anything to get away from it should be protected. But you can walk out of a restaraunt.

Any sort of healthcare system gets clogged (by "clogged" I mean "at least marginally more burdened") with fat people like the arteries of a fat person get clogged with fat. Also, obese people take up too much seating and are unfortunate to look at.

It's not as easy to see the detriments to other people as it is with smoking, but they're there.

I used to get pissed off about the anti-smoking hysteria but now it makes sense because it's kind of lame that people who don't smoke are still exposed to it.

And another thing, I think most people here have had a shitty fast food job at one point or another, and sooner or later you have to clean the parking lot, and you start to realize that on any paved surface with gutters or grass edges, there will always be an infinite number of cigarette butts.

Do you people even realize what this costs society? We cut down more trees than there are in the entire universe, every single day, just to manufacture the papers for cigarettes.

Not to mention that all that burning paper is the real cause of global warming, what with it being more exothermic than a thousand supernovas.

Um, I'm pretty sure smoking is not the leading cause of global warming. Wasn't it auto emissions? Sources maybe? I'd like to see. :)

How can you cut down more trees then there are in the universe in one day? After that day, there wouldn't be any more trees, unless your cutting down theoretical trees? Make some sense man!

Where'd you get those figures?

Source:
1) Go to any parking lot outside a fast food joint.
2) Count the number of cigarette butts you see.
3) Since there should be an infinite number, you will be long dead before you reach this step. You obviously haven't been following instructions.

Why are you dealing with nonexistent numbers when there is a finite number of trees?

Anyway, Im all for helping people to stop smoking, but the fact is that in the UK you can be prescribed nicotine patches by your doctor, there are free clinics, free support groups.

Hell, even the number you call to find out where your nearest support group is is free!

Smokers have enough help availible without being allowed to skive off work!

Hey, its your body.
Your profile says your old enought to buy smokes, go knock yourself out.
I am now a non tobacco smoker.
I started in grade 6 & really got cool by grade 7 smoking because I needed that sweet ,sweet nicotine.
I found quitting to be ..... difficult.
When I go to the bar & meet up with friends who smoke it is like there is a cloud of stench around them. Even if they haven't had a smoke recently, you can still smell it.
It is gross, but you won't find me trying to talk you out of taking up the habit.
