Proofreading your posts? 2007-04-14 00:20:23 Reply

Does anyone actually read their own posts before submitting them these days?

I've gone through several threads today with much difficulty because they've been nigh impossible to understand. The majority of you are unable to covey your own thoughts coherently.
It does not take very long to read what you have just written. Most posted messages on the forum are under a paragraph in length.

I'm willing to bet the majority of you do horribly in your English composition classes. If you want to do better in school, the least you can do is try to type properly here. Consider it an opportunity to practice.

Honestly, it's been painful for me today. How do any of you expect to communicate if you can't convey what you think clearly?

Yeah, this is a rare day that I read threads and, like you said, it gets hard. Doesn't seem much different than what I remember from earlier days, though, lol.

I look for the red squiggly lines under my words.

Other than that, it's pretty much just reading as I type. Possibly a cursory glance if something looks off.

We tend to get a majority of people who don't know how to type proper, or are too young to understand that typing this way is so much easier for everyone.
I do share your pain on the illiteracy front, as well.

It aggravates me when I see ppl typing liek this becuz their 2 lazy to use there brains.

This is a forum, dammit, not a fucking instant message box. Proper grammar applies...drives me nuts when people don't make a basic effort to sound intelligent.

I actually and typically DON'T proofread my posts. I blame the fact that as I'm typing, I'm reading what appears on-screen and I generally have an idea of what I'm going to say before I set out and say it.

Yea, sometimes I have posts that needs proofreading so I'm sure to get my point across effectively and properly, but this is certainly not one of them.

I've also noticed recently that my comma abuse has become worse and worse. I'm trying to work on that, subtley.

I usually proofread my posts, but it's not a strict inspection, just a glancing over to see if there's anything obviously wrong.

Yes, I proofread my posts frequently. I sometimes check for punctuation, and making sure that I get the message I want across.

Haha, sometimes I type out a whole post, and press back because I don't really feel like posting it. It's rather odd actually.

I personally dont give a shit about spelling, punctuation and shit like that. I usually see the red squiggly under the words but if you put ie instead of ei it isnt even worth correcting

Proofread? Phhff. I make sure I type correctly!

See? No errors.

I hardly understand some users though.

I don't typically proofread my posts. Like many users, I just kind of watch what I'm typing to make sure it looks alright. In some cases it depends on the post's length and importance.

I don't find that odd at all; I do it all the time.

This is getting pretty repetitive. Ahwell. My main problem with this site community is that couldn't give a shit sometimes. I mean, when I'm tired I won't go out of my way. But for the people who just typ liek dis n dont car fi ist legibl. The thing is, is that it won't change... ever. Untill they learn that it's much faster and neater, then it will be the same.

I r only getting B- in English. :[

The thing is I only seem to notice my typos after I've already made the post, even if I read over it beforehand. Something about this yellow box must be throwing me off.

I don't specifically proof read, but my style of posting means that I often quote multiple people and go back to see if I have missed anything. As such I kind of inadvertently proof read my posts. When on my laptop at home I also have firefox to spell check for me, so there really is no excuse.

Having said that I do make the odd error here and there, and more often than not it drives me crazy when I read back over my posts and see it. I've always been a perfectionist, and having mistakes in my posts probably bothers me far more than anyone else.

A few spelling errors doesn't bother me when other people post- there are a lot of younger users around who may not be as good at English as most users, some people don't use English as their first language, and typos are unavoidable if you type quickly. It is people who deliberately shorten words and make whole sentences unreadable that I can't stand, and as such I tend to stay away from General much of the time.

I only read my posts after I post them, and then correct them if I've said something wrong. But generally, I'm not a complete and utter failure of a human being when it comes to communication via the written english language. So... it's ok.

My problem is that I proofread too much, unless maybe it's really long, and I don't have the time. Therefore, I mention this in order to avoid getting anxious about a mistake.

I do. Most of the time, they're alright. But the human brain can only deterrmine if a word is spelled correctly by the first and last letters of the words, you can change them up in the middle and it would still look like the same word.

Ex. This sentence is right. But tihs seentnce is worng.

If you read the second one fast enough, it MIGHT look right. That's where people fuck up, they read too fast.
