4.07 / 5.00 10,082 ViewsI'm looking for help drawing a kinda grungy, old looking, metal surface. so if you have any advice, have your own example, or feel like making a example, alls welcome.
I made this in photoshop and it's the best example of what I'm trying to achieve.
...lemme guess, it's for your navigation thingy! Did you find someone to code it?
This site seems to have a bunch of interesting tutorials... you might have to combine some (like 'rough chrome" or 'heated metal' and 'slime', etc.).
Be sure to post what you end up with! :D
If by "old looking" you mean rust, I could help you with that. But regular metal I seem to have a problem with. Example below.

holy shit that is awesome. I want your babies.
what I meant was I need help just drawing a flat surface, and I need one thats not so complected. I just want some way to brush a flat grey surface to so you can see its metal. but still, that is awesome, even though it doesn't really help me.
lol sorry
if u want just flat colour like ur one, i would advise adding some more contrast to the colours
have several layers of that dark pattern u drew round the edges but make it get smaller and smaller and darker and darker the closer to the edge u get and see what u come up with
also getting a thin brush with a lighter colour with low opacity and try adding scratches....u can try adding lots of scratches for a brushed metal look
and also highlights, imagine where ur light source is coming from...and on the sharp edges add a light line....slightly lighter than the surrounding colour
hope this helps

Assuming the program your using has them, the burn and dodge tools are a great way to quickly add light and dark spots/lines (I recommend using soft-edged brushes). The downside is you have to use the layer you want shaded, versus building layer on top of layer.
Breast Cancer Awareness month is over...stop squeezing random boobies. :(
i dont use the burn and dodge tool that often.....only to lighten and darken chunks of an image...never to shade....i feel the shading becomes tacky
how ever, dodge is good for metal for touching up highlights u already made
dont be afraid to try extreme contrasts...like chrome....that might be going overboard with the effect ur looking for though.
soft brushes might be wrong for this material...metal is hard and sharp...but if u know what ur doing u can use soft brushes and still make it look like metal

sorry, just read what u put again.....and soft brushes with dodge is the way to go.. :S
but u can get some nice effects with hard brushes and dodge too
