...by the US and allies, what do think the outcome would be? I think the US could kiss goodbye a city or two, and most of their invading force. Also Japan, South Korea. NK have nukes and will use them if provoked.

..which would be suicidal. The ensuing retaliation would lay waste to the whole Northen Peninsula and surrounds.
I think if the US has a plan to attack NK, then all the world's closet commies and peace protestors would be packing their suitcases to converge on the region (myself included)

Obviously the nuclear production and storage facilities would be the first targets of allied bombing...not to mention, the closest thing they could shoot at would be alaska, the taipo dong class 2 type missile is only hypothetical as of now.
If no other countries got involved, like China did in the Korean war, it would be over very quickly, and North Korea would probably fall even faster than Iraq.

I don't think China would get involved since doing so now with the way the world is set up would just be begging for WWIII. If the initial stikes went well we'd stomp the holy hell out of NK in a few weeks, cleanup on the other hand would take one hell of a lot longer, I'm picturing years maybe decades. Not to mention the PR disaster of attacking them so hot on the heels of Iraq.

Since we can all trust China so much. Not like they disassembled our planes and held our people as prisoners until they got tired of the president bitching about it. Yeah. Besides, China has SARS, so they're preoccupied.

*Turns on DAG light*
Isnt it so convenient for the US that SARS came up when it did? The one country that the US really doesnt want to fuck with is now strangely preoccupied during a period of US aggression against countries not very far away. (a Muslim friend told me that SARS was bioengineered by the US to be just enough of a threat to keep china occupied without appearing to be a biological weapon)

Basically, if they did that then everyone would hate them. They'd face even bigger diplomatic repercussions than in Iraq, and even then N. Korea might launch a last gasp nuke.

Yeah but at who that last nuke wouldn't being going near the states unless NK has some serious magic up their sleeves we don't know about. (Note this is isn't sarcastic. I'm actually seriously wondering who you think would have to eat it.)

Getting back to the topic, why do you think NK would fall so quickly? Half of the NK budget goes on their military, and their troops, numbering millions, are professionals. It will take months if to defeat them, at a terrible cost. Japan will be nuked, guaranteed, as will SK, possibly the US if they have the missile tech (even though they don't need missiles). NK is a military state, and their purpose is to prepare to fight a war. They are nothing like Iraq, and we should be wary of them.

oh wow. someone that knows something about Korea other than me. i know i've beaten this topic with a wooden mallet, but let the good times roll!
NK will be nothing like Iraq. nuff said. a military with 9 million troops, well trained or not, is still 9 million troops. their weaponry is a bit outdated and can't even shine a light on US equipment.
but fact of the matter is the US will never directly attack NK. never. why? only 25 million reasons. without havning to even step into South Korea, NK can rain artillery on Seoul only 20 miles from the DMZ. one of the largest cities in the world will lay in ruin in a matter of days.
on top of that the world economy will go into a tailspin. let me just rattle of some Korean companies: Samsung, LG (Lucky Goldstar), Hyundai, Daewoo, Kia, Hanjin, and more. now i know many of you will snicker at Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo, but you tell me if you don't see a handful of them on the road everyday. you know what that means? that means the US economy will suffer. and when the US economy suffers, everyone else suffers.
so. what is Dubya's priority after Iraq and al Qaeda? the US economy. he isn't going to risk anything if he wants another four years.

Indeed, but the catalyst of a war might not be the US. NK hate the Japs, and have on numerous times stated that if Japan build up their armed forces, NK will launch a pre-emptive strike against Japan. Japan on the other hand fear that they will eventually be attacked and have also threatened a pre-emptive attack. There are some in Japan who want to abandon Japan's pacifist attitude and build up their forces to defend themselves. Japan has no way of attacking NK; no long range missiles, nukes (so they say), air-to-ground attack capability on their aircraft. They have to rely on the American military to defend them, making them a US protectorate.
The Japs recently launched 2 spy satellites to observe NK, and this has caused great friction between the countries.
The US will be involved in a potential war, as they have interests and military all over the region, like Taiwan, which will probably be attacked. They will go to war if their friends in the Pacific are attacked.
The NK might not have as modern an army as the US, but that doesn't make them any less deadlier, they will kill many. They also have nukes. When the Coalition forces invaded Iraq the Iraqis replied with a light slap. If the US (and whatever allies) do the same to NK, they will be knocked staight to the ground, will eventually win, I believe.
Well, lets hope there will be no war.

North Korea would not fall easy at all, unless we attacked them with nuclear weapons, which I doubt it would come to that. Remember how hard they fought in Vietnam? they would fight just as hard, Iraqi fighters were all talk as usual, they talk the talk but can't walk the walk, North Korea will do the walk, it would be a bloody nightmare that I hope we will never have to see. Have you ever seen them marching? it's scary, they look like toy soldiers...

I agree. NK would be hard to defeat, and any conflict would have an atrocious human cost. Possibly another Vietnam situation. The NK army is around 3.5 million strong, with a maximum number of over 6 million avilable fighters. It would not be easy.
No march is scarier than the NAZI goosestep.

North Korea would bend over faster than Richard Simmons taking it from Mr.T. Come on, what could the North Koreans do? They have some nuclear capabilities, but i don't think we'd exactly allow them to use them. We've been spying on their installations and could easily sneak attack and destroy all their launch pads. So, the only thing they could really do would be to get into a paddle boat and row over to America to do any damage. Plus, think about who would aid NK. We have...um...nobody. Iraq had a higher list of potential friends AND they'd been oil bribing Russia to pressure us and nothing came of that. NK would be forced to surrender their eggroll-eating pansy ass army due to the fact that they suck. We could use our intelligent army to its utmost potential as sand is not a factor, and this post is a total joke. NK is weak, has no allies, and is run by Kim Jong Il (which is a huge detraction, i mean this guy thinks America's best exports are slasher films).

well, if we dwell into Asian history, the Japanese occupied almost the whole of eastern Asia and Micronesia until the end of WWII. in fact the Japanese burned Korean books, banned the Korean language from public use and more or less raped and pillaged. i'm sure most of you heard of the book "Rape of Nanking". if you have you know the attrocities committed by the Japanese. Korea is no different from China. in fact the Japanese occupied Korea for half a century. that is more than enough time to create bad blood. the South Koreans got over it. they are now friend and ally with one another.
i liken the North Koreans as a senile, stubborn old woman. like my grandmother. she still hates the Japanese. and i don't blame her since they tortured her for not stopping and looking down in the presence of a Japanese soldier. a good reason to be angry, but that was in the 30s. it's been 70 years. we can see by North Korean isolation that they aren't with the times. like an old woman.
but you have to understand this. the last thing the US wants is a land war in Asia. it just brings up bad memories of Vietnam. will Korea or Taiwan be another Vietnam? i'd doubt it. but then again you never know.
and speaking of Taiwan, if the US wants to start up with the Chinese, they'll have another thing coming to them and vice-versa.

Yeah NK has a LOT of soldiers, and they're pretty damn dedicated and well trained. Unfortunately what it comes down to is tech and they're nowhere near our capabilities. The type of jungle warfare possible in Vietnam isn't really feasible anymore. Leaf cover and albedo ranges aren't enough anymore.
The Chinese could feasibly become involved (I don't think it too likely) and if they do there's relatively few options. We might look around see the hell about to come and go "fuck it, we're going home". Someone loses their godamned minds and sends the nukes up in which case lights out, humanity has left the building, or maybe people will look around see how fucking bad an idea nukes are an keep it confined to conventional weapons reulting in a long bloody meatgrinder where anyone in the crossfire gets ripped to small bloody chunks.
Hopefully people will remember what war is when we have the chance and keep it form happening.

Yes, I know about the Rape of Nanking, and Korea being a Japanese colony for many a year, but I thought SK still despised Japan. Just look on antijapan.com and you'll see quite a few SK anti Japanese remarks. It seems like most countries in that area despise Japan.
I can understand that the US doesn't want another Asian war, but they may be forced to fight, not just in a NK conflict. If you recall the leaked US document that included the instances that America would use nuclear weapons, China invading Taiwan was one of them. It is unlikely that situation will arise, but nevertheless it is possible. The Chinese stated that they will do everything in their power to stop Taiwan being independent, using military force as a last resort.
Why do people think that just because NK has a less hi-tech army than the US they'll be easy to beat?
Vietnam, anyone?
Alright, if there was a war, with NK aggression being the catalyst, who do you think would fight them?
Also, don't forget there are other methods of delivering nuclear bombs than just missiles. They might a suitcase bomb, simlilar to what the Soviets built.

By the way, mysecondstar, NK has around 3.6 million troops, as opposed to your 9 million, with a maximum number of over 6 million men able to fight in the country. Got that from CIA factfile.

oh technicalities ^_^
3.6 + 6 = 9.6
which basically means there are 9 million people that will fight if it comes to that. just consolidating my numbers is all ^_^
