WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Doctors have removed a small, malignant growth from presidential spokesman Tony Snow's abdomen, but they determined the cancer had spread to his liver, the White House said Tuesday.
Snow, 51, told reporters during a Friday briefing that he was having the growth removed but shrugged it off as a precautionary measure.
"We have found a small growth in my lower abdomen. Blood tests are negative [for cancer]. PET scans are negative," he said. "But out of an aggressive sense of caution, I'm going to go in for surgery on Monday and have it removed."
Snow underwent surgery to have the growth -- about the size of his pinky fingertip -- removed from his pelvic area, and doctors found that his cancer had metastasized, or spread, to his liver, said Snow's deputy, Dana Perino.
Snow's condition follows closely on the heels of the announcement that Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, had spread into an incurable form.
Snow had his colon removed in 2005 due to colon cancer. Doctors discovered that the cancer has returned and spread to his liver.
Like Edwards, the outlook for Snow is bleak.
Emory oncology professor Otis Brawley said that Snow faces chemotherapy and radation treatments, but "this condition frequently is usually fatal." He went on to say that only 5 to 10 percent of patients with similar diagnoses do well.

And?
Now, because the tests were negative, couldn't it be a new, yet not malignant tumor?

The tests that came back negative were done before the surgery. It was during the surgery that they found that the growth in his abdomen was malignant, and that it had spread to his liver.

Hmmm...
Well, what impact will this have on us?

Little, if any.

I wouldn't wish this type of illness onto someone I hated.
Hundreds of millions have been spent on finding cures etc. & still so much left to do.

Me neither, but I'm surprised that someone hasn't come out yet saying "Well, if Bush wasn't so against stem cell research/environmental regulations/whatever, Snow would have a cure he could take."
Same way they did with Christopher Reeve.

You do realise that there are many nations out there that are going full on with stem cell research.
The U.S. has dropped back, & is falling further & further behind. There was a great article in National Geographic a year or so back.

The American People!
"The earth is over populated!"
"Damnit Bush! If you'd have just put more funding into stem cell research, he'd still be alive!"

Yes, because refusing to use a particular kind of stemcells is going to put the US back in the Bronze Age.

I don't like the way the man operates himself, but damned if I don't hope he pulls through.
So I'm basically awesome.

One in three is kind of bad, I mean think about it thats like if I took you, me and the poster above you, and then randomly killed one of us.

why is this news? Are the news stations so out of information that they resort to discussing snow's health concerns? I'm sure he loves to see it pasted all over CNN and Fox News. Ok he has cancer and it's horrible. Yes America should be informed but I think there are other things the news can focus on. Like Anna Nicole, theres some great news >.>.

Is this why you made the topic?
And I can think of many worse ways to go than with cancer and able to afford treatment. Come on.
The one thing force produces is resistance.
