I think most people are aware of that. But most people from Britain and the UK that Americans, Canadians, and Australians and everyone else in the world meet or have contact with are English. So that has become synonymous.

Just like British people (and Americans themseves) call everyone from the United States "Americans" even though the Americas contains two continents with almost 1.5 billion people, and the US only makes 1/5th (300 million) of that.

And yet, an English will change how they refer to themselves depending on the situation as well. If they are talking about their economy, they'll mention the UK as a whole because combined its bigger than England. But if they are talking about cultural matters, an English person will refer to themselves only as English to distance themselves from the Scottish, the Welsh, and the Northern Irish. Same goes for the rest of them.

Alot of Welsh and Scots as well absolutely hate the English, so when you ask them where they are from they will say usually say "Wales" instead of Britain or the UK in order to distinguish themselves from the English.

So it's obvious that some people are going to be confused, or those who aren't are intentionally going to use a loose term to refer to someone from one of the UK lands in order to reduce the confusion in other people who don't understand the differences.

Wait, all those little islands (Isle of man, Jersey Island etc.) are not part of the UK? I thought the concept "United Kingdom" encompassed not only Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but also all areas near and far that are governerned by the Kingdom (e.g Gibraltar).

That is true I just try to tune the idiots out. I have friends over in the U.K. and about 1/3 of my heritage is from there, I kinda got to know that stuff.

You know what i hate? in american "sitcoms" they always have british peaple using those annoying posh accents, no one talks like that, except for peaple in places like north london oxford ect, and when a american talks to a british in real life, do they really start singing "oh britania" out of randomness?
